Barbara Mae Smith Datwyler

September 26, 1926 — January 9, 2017

Barbara Mae Smith Datwyler, 90, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center.

Our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother was born on September 26, 1926 in Paradise, Utah to Joseph Norris Smith and Mary Norman Smith. She was the second oldest of seven children. Her mother and baby sister passed away when Barbara was three. She attended elementary school in Paradise and graduated from South Cache. She then came to Logan to help her sister Mary with a new baby when she met Chester Glen Datwyler. Glen’s little green Chevy with a rumble seat was irresistible, and an eternal romance began. We all know how girls love flashy cars and a man in a military uniform; she married Glen on November 9, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple.

Barbara loved her family and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. She cherished her posterity and was tireless in her loving care for them. Sunday evenings were a favorite time for family to gather at her house and enjoy the good company and wonderful food. She was a legendary cook, seamstress and hostess. Family Christmas parties at her house will never be forgotten. At retirement, she and her husband Glen spent a summer touring the United States and then spent their winters in St. George going to the temple, playing golf and enjoying the warm weather. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various callings throughout her life, including serving many years in the temple. She worked many years at Bernina and Threads and Things in Logan.

She is survived by her children; Perry Glen Datwyler of Rancho Mirage, California; Susan (Blaine) Bingham of Nibley; Clair Lynn Datwyler of Smithfield and Todd Charles (Kimberly Carter) Datwyler of Providence; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen Datwyler; her parents; and seven siblings, Mary Emma Smith Schwartz, Elizabeth Smith (an infant sister,) an infant brother, Jolyn Smith Obray, Tom Bradley Smith and Joseph Boyd Smith.

A viewing will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center in Logan on Friday, January 13th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Logan City Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14th. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.allenmortuaries.net
