Bertha Louella Glenney Powell

December 8, 1939 — April 22, 2016

Bertha Louella Powell passed away at the Huntsman Cancer Institute ICU on Friday, April 22 following cardiac arrest at her North Logan home. She was born on December 18, 1939, in Tyler, Texas, to Walter and Bertha (“Billye”) Glenney and raised in San Antonio. Louella received her formal education at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, graduating with degrees in Psychology and English, and later earned an MFA in Stage Costuming from BYU. In 1963 she married William Powell; they were later divorced. A gifted, natural teacher and inspiration to all who knew her, Louella retired from USU in 2015 as Associate Professor of Theatre Costuming, having served in a similar capacity at Casper College (Wyoming), Dixie State University, the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and professionally at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and 13 seasons with the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. She had earlier taught middle school English in San Antonio and was a woman of many talents. An accomplished pianist and avid quilter, her skills included Brazilian embroidery, stage makeup, knitting, and many other handcrafts. She operated a cake decorating business in Anchorage, Alaska, and liked to recall having once played an accordion solo on the Ed Sullivan Show as well as for several theatrical productions. Louella is survived by her four daughters: Julia Powell (Colin Johnson) of North Logan; Carla Cashman (Tom) of Bedford, Ohio; Susan Powell (Joe Krygier) of Columbus, Ohio; and Amy Crawford (Dennis J.) of Casper, Wyoming. She also leaves behind younger brother Sam Glenney (Shirley) of College Station, Texas, and her three grandchildren Thomas, Cody, Samantha, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Although a life-long member of the Roman Catholic Church, Louella was ecumenical in spirit. Services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church (85 East 100 North) in Logan at 12 noon on Thursday, April 28 with Pastor Scott Thalacker of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church presiding. There will be viewings at Allen-Hall Mortuary (34 East Center St., Logan) on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and Thursday from 10:30 – 11:30 am. The family wishes to thank the North Logan Paramedic team, LifeFlight, Dr. Khong and the staff of the Huntsman Center—especially the ICU team--for their care. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her name to the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.allenmortuaries.net
