Carolyn Mathews Raat

July 19, 1932 — October 7, 2016

Carolyn Mathews Raat died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Friday October 7, 2016 in Logan, Utah. Carolyn was born on July 19, 1932 in Providence, Utah to Edna Tibbitts Mathews and William Denton Mathews. Carolyn was raised on the family farm and orchard in Providence. She attended and graduated schools in Cache Valley. Carolyn graduated from Nursing School in Ogden, Utah in 1953. She earned her Bachelors of Nursing from Westminster College in 1973 and her Masters of Nursing from Brigham Young University in 1983.
Carolyn dedicated her life to serving others, both professionally in her career as a nurse and as a single mom to her four children. Carolyn’s professional achievements include: ICU Head Nurse at Logan Hospital, Logan, Utah; House Supervisor at McKay Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah; Nursing Administrator at King Fahad Hospital, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia; Director of Women and Children at St. Benedicts Hospital, Ogden, Utah; Administrator at Lakeview Hospital, Bountiful, Utah; Administrator at Dixie Medical Center, St. George, Utah. Upon retiring from Dixie Medical Center, Carolyn volunteered in many capacities in the St.George area.
Carolyn was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed the friendships made in her various church callings and serving in the Temple.
Carolyn was a devoted Mother and Grandmother. While single handedly raising her four children she often worked two jobs while still finding time for family vacations and making memories. Her grandchildren knew her as their biggest fan. The door was always open at Grandma’s house.
Carolyn is survived by her four children: Susan Petersen (Ron), Mark Raat (Debbie), Stephen Raat (Sandra), Julie Anne Klauck (Mike) along with 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren with two on the way.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Gloria Marriotti, and her beloved four legged constant companion “LadyBug”.
Funeral services will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, at 1:00 P.M. on Friday October 14, 2016. A viewing will be held at the same location prior to services from 11:30-12:30. Interment will be immediately following services at the Providence Cemetery, 700 River Heights Boulevard, River Heights.
Carolyn’s family would like to thank the staff and Buffy Petersen at Cache Valley Assisted Living for being a second family the last two years. Thank you to Rocky Mountain Care for the love shown to our mom and grandma. And thank you to Access Hospice, especially Dianne Crockett who is an angel with invisible wings.
We love you Mom and Grandma. We’ll miss you every day.
