Cecil Hess Nish

February 17, 1926 — December 10, 2014

LOGAN, UTAH: Cecil H. Nish of Logan, Utah, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the age of 88. He was born on February 17, 1926, in Plymouth, Utah, to Robert T. and Jane W. Hess. He was the tenth of ten children.
Cecil moved to Logan at the age of five when his father lost everything in the Great Depression. The family moved to Logan for a fresh start and Cecil worked with the dairy cows, chickens, and later, was in charge of the pig farm. He always knew the value of hard work and never shied away from working hard. Cecil would eventually be known as one of the best diesel mechanics in the valley.
Cecil grew up playing marbles with other children in the neighborhood and would often go ice skating in the winter as well. He spoke fondly of one neighbor, Mrs. Tims, who would always make a big pot of chili for the children to come home to after ice skating. His father had a team of horses and a sleigh and would take the team and the sleigh right over the fences, on top of the snow piled so high. Cecil would spend his summers at the dry farm, continuing the tradition of hard work.
Cecil served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He would later belong to the Utah Chapter of the Beehive Mariners and worked tirelessly to get benefits for the Merchant Marines.
On June 18, 1947, Cecil married the love of his life, Shirley O. Nish. They were married for 65 years. They traveled extensively and enjoyed taking the trailer and boat and going fishing together. They lived in Reseda, CA; Dillon, Mont.; and Butte Mont., before settling in Logan, UT. They enjoyed going to Aggie basketball games and held season tickets for many years
Cecil was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many callings within the Church.
Cecil is survived by his daughter, Lisa, his grandson Eric (Natalie), and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, sons Stephen Cecil and Randy Clark, his parents, five brothers, and four sisters.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sunshine Terrace, Wing One, for their care of Cecil for the past seven years, and to thank Intermountain Hospice for their assistance in Cecil’s final days. We would also like to thank Dr. Michael J. Stones for his exceptional care throughout the years.
