Cleo Tibbitts Hugie

Cleo Tibbitts Hugie¸ 84, passed away in Logan, Utah, on September 30, 2017. She was born October 22, 1931 in Providence, Utah to Ira J. and Wynona Corbridge Tibbitts. During her early youth, Cleo picked strawberries on the Providence Bench, herded her father’s milk cows for several miles to and from the pasture each day, and was an all-star softball player for the Providence Lions.
Cleo graduated from South Cache High School and attended Utah State University for one year prior to her marriage to Eldon Riggs Hugie on June 29, 1951, in the Logan LDS Temple. She worked as a telephone operator for three years to assist her husband to complete his education at USU. In 1954, Cleo joined her husband as he entered the U.S. Air Force for a three year period which included flight training in Bartow Florida and Big Spring, Texas, intelligence school for one yeqr at Wichita Falls, Texas and a final year at Shaw AFB in South Carolina. In 1957 they moved to Berkeley, California for three years where Eldon completed law school. During their three years at USU and the three years at law school, they spent each summer at Card Ranger Station in Logan Canyon where they served as recreational assistants for the U.S. Forest Service. Following law school, Cleo and Eldon lived in Bakersfield, California from 1960 through 1968; then spent 9 years in Monterey, California where Eldon was a principal in a cattle operation with ranches and feedlots in California, Hawaii, Texas and Australia; and then lived in Shady Cove, Oregon where she and Eldon resided on their Rogue River Ranch for over ten years before returning to Bakersfield where they resided until 2014; and have spent most of their time living in their Logan home over the past three years.
During their marriage, Cleo and Eldon have made numerous international trips, including all islands of the South Pacific (Tahiti was the favorite), New Zealand and Australia; all of the Mediterranean countries and islands including southern Europe, Israel and Egypt; Switzerland; all of the North Atlantic countries, including Holland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Russia, the Scandinavian countries, Iceland, Ireland and England. They have enjoyed three cruises to Alaska and, this past year, enjoyed a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and another cruise which included the St. Lawrence River, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.
Throughout her life, Cleo has been actively involved in various church callings, including serving as Relief Society president in four different wards in California and Oregon. Cleo has attended many temples throughout the world, but has always been most desirous of returning to the Logan Temple.
Cleo is survived by her husband, Eldon Hugie, and by her five children: Michael in Bakersfield and Ventura, California; Susan Richardson (Luke) in Portland, Oregon; David (Laila) in Shady Cove, Oregon; Robert (Connie) in Keizer, Oregon; and Patti Chamberlain (Eric) in Eagle, Idaho; by her sister, Deanna Tibbitts Brizzee, in Rexburg, Idaho; and by her brother, Don Tibbitts of Logan, Utah. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, each of whom she loved dearly: Carolyn Thompson with her children, Sara and Jon in Oxnard, CA; Jennifer Hugie in Oxnard, CA; Bryce Richardson and Walker Donnelly in Portland, OR; Julia Hugie Brooks (Jeremy) in Tooele, UT with their children Makena, Kaden Zial, Skarlet and Maverick; Heather Hugie Tortel (Evan) in Smithfield, UT with their daughter, Emry; Nicole Hugie Dahle (Chris) in Sydney, Montana; Ethan Hugie and Tyler Yates in Shady Cove, OR; Kevin, Alex, Andrew and Lauren Hugie in Keizer, OR; Chris Chamberlain (Brionne) in Logan, Utah; Katherine Chamberlain in Phoenix, AZ; Spencer Chamberlain (Kelli) in Logan, UT; Evan Olson (McKenna) in Portland, OR; Bryce Olson (Makenna) Dever, CO with their children, Porter and Brylee; Jesse Olson at BYU Provo; Erica Olson at BYU Idaho; and by Austin Chamberlain, currently serving in the Frankfurt Germany Mission. Cleo also had great love for her numerous nieces and nephews living in various parts of the United States.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 7th at 11 AM in the Allen-Hall Mortuary chapel, 34 East Center Street, in Logan, Utah. A viewing at the mortuary will be from 6 PM to 8 PM on Friday, October 6th; and from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM prior to the services. The services will be conducted by Bishop Jim Chambers of the Canyon Ridge Ward and burial will be in the Logan cemetery.
