David Lavar Nelson

November 30, 1933 — February 16, 2015

David Lavar Nelson, 81, of Providence and Beaver Dam, Utah, passed away at his home in Providence on February 16, 2015, of Alzheimer disease.
David was born November 30, 1933, in Burton, Idaho to Andrew A. and Wilhelmina Vanderwel Nelson. He enjoyed growing up with five brothers and five sisters and attended rural elementary schools where his parents were teachers, with occasional attendance at “city” schools in Rexburg, Idaho.
Military service in the U.S. Army included training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as a gunner in a tank battalion and ten months in South Korea as an Ammunition Renovation Specialist in 1956. He served an additional eight years in the Army Reserve.
David continued his education at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, and Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and Master’s degree In Forest Pathology.
David married Charlotte Ericksen of Logan, August 30, 1963, in the Logan LDS Temple. They moved to California where David attended the University of California, Berkeley, and received his PhD degree in Plant Pathology.
Returning to Logan, David worked as a Research Plant Pathologist at the USDA Forest and Range Experiment Station for a few years then transferred to the Forest Service Shrub Sciences Laboratory in Provo, Utah. After retirement he continued work on research projects at the Shrub Lab as well as spending more time in Beaver Dam on the farm and planning new projects for his Beaver Dam greenhouse.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte and siblings Arlene Williams, Lois Hatch, Merla Nelson, Nylin Nelson and Nell Jean Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Coral Harris, and brothers Kwenden, Marvin, Dwain and Zyrl.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 24th in the Beaver Dam LDS chapel at 16025 North Beaver Dam Road at 12:00 noon. Visitation for family and friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Beaver Dam Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
