Dean Wayne Hurd

July 8, 1931 — January 16, 2018

Dean Wayne Hurd, our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and family patriarch passed away at the age of 86 on January 16 in Providence Utah after a full and rich life that was complete with wonder, adventure, joy and success.
Dean was born in Kimberly, Idaho  July 8, 1931 to Basil Wayne and Clarissa Louise Staley
Dad grew up mainly in the small southern Idaho town of Filer where he learned to love the beautiful outdoors that state has to offer. Frequently found fishing and hunting or roaming the immediate area with his Father & Mother who shared the same interests. Dad say’s his younger growing up years were as though the three of them were on an amazing non stop adventure. Love was very evident in the relationship that was forged by this lively threesome.
In late fall of 1941, the family moved to Pico Rivera California where Dean’s father was a jig builder for Douglas Aircraft. After the end of the war, they returned to Filer where Deans Father and Uncle started an auto repair shop.
Dean attended High School in Filer where he graduated in 1949, a proud Wildcat.
Upon graduating from High School, Dean enrolled at Utah State Agriculture College in 1950. He graduated in June of 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. That same month he married Marilyn Sorenson of Logan, his eternal Sweetheart. There marriage was later solemnized in the Logan  LDS Temple. In October of that year, Dean reported to military basic training at Fort Lee, Virginia, soon after he and Marilyn were stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Dad also spent a year of active duty in Heidelberg Germany. Following an Honorable discharge  after obtaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1955, Dean and Marilyn returned to Cache Valley where Dad resumed his education at Utah State University. In 1957 Dean earned a Masters degree in Educational Administration.
In 1958 Dean began a career in the Text Book Publishing Industry, accepting a sales position with Henry Holt and Company, later to become Holt, Rienheart & Winston. Success came quickly and in 1960 dean was asked to move to the San Francisco Bay Area as the Western Regional Manager which he accepted and the Hurd’s were off to California, settling in Walnut Creek which would remain their home for the next 39 fantastic years.
Dean retired from Holt after 25 years and began a Photographic Art Company with a dear friend, John Bradley Wagner. After several years of being involved with Impact Photo Art and developing a highly successful marketing strategy and sales organization, Dad moved on to a career in Real Estate sales with Mason McDuffie where he remained for 16 years before finally retiring for good and he and Mom returned to Cache Valley, settling in Providence.
Dean and Marilyn's earthly companionship of 61 years was an enchanted one which welcomed 3 children into their family: Jeffrey Dean (Sheilah) of Providence Utah, Michael Wayne (Tami) of Boise Idaho and Craig George (Janet) of American Fork Utah.
Dean was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in numerous positions including, Scout master, Sunday School Teacher, Bishopric, Bishop, High Council, Temple worker, Primary and more Young Men’s and Young Women’s camps throughout the years than I can count…….he truly love the Youth as he did all of Gods children. He could truly be written as “One who loved his fellow men”.
He loved his Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ. He loved the scriptures and knew them! He had a fervent belief in the Atonement of Christ, the restoration of the gospel and a deep and abiding love for modern Prophets. He was a faithful home teacher and his actions always were in harmony with his beliefs.
He was a great lover of poetry and personally penned hundreds of poems about all he held dear and sacred. As a child I loved accompanying him to California State Curriculum Adoptions in Sacramento and listening to him swoon the building which was full of educators with his readings of many of the great poets. It was there I first learned what a standing ovation was.
While he will be deeply missed, we as family revel to know that he is reunited with his beloved sweetheart Marilyn, his Mother and Father and numerous loved ones who welcome back to his Heavenly home.
He is preceded in death by his wife Marilyn and his parents.
He is survived by his three sons and their wives, 12 grandchildren,  and “almost” 18 great grandchildren.
A viewing and funeral in celebration of this valiant man’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Foxridge LDS Chapel located at 155N 100E, Providence  UT 84332.
Viewing to begin at 10:00AM followed by the Funeral at 11:30AM. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery
As a family we wish to express our gratitude to the wonderful staff of the Access Hospice Group and the the Cache Valley Assisted Living Center for the kind, loving and compassionate care they provided to our Father as he closed out his mortal sojourn…..you are deeply appreciated by our family.
