Devoe Charles Rickert

March 29, 1924 — February 4, 2018

Devoe C. Rickert was born on March 29, 1924 in the small town of Minidoka, Idaho to William and Emma Rickert. After a long active life, he passed away Feb. 4, 2018 at Logan Regional Hospital surrounded by family. After a life full of accomplishments and experiences he will be remembered by family and friends as a farmer, a soldier, an educator, mentor and father.
Devoe grew up working on the family farm in Rupert, Idaho during the depression in a time when teams of horses where used to farm. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the army and served as a combat engineer in Patton’s Third Army during World War II.
After being discharged from the army, Devoe returned to the family farm and then began what would become a life-long pursuit of knowledge and life’s work as an educator. Devoe earned a Teaching Certificate from the Teacher College at Albion, Idaho, a Master’s degree from the Univ. of Idaho at Moscow and a Ph.D in Special Education from the University of Oregon in Eugene.
During his career he taught school in Sweet Home, Oregon. Then after obtaining his Master’s degree worked as Principle then Superintendent of Schools in Glenn’s Ferry, Idaho and completed his professional career as a Professor at Utah State University in Logan. While at USU, Devoe helped to establish both the Center for Persons with Disabilities (Exceptional Child Center) and the Cache Employment and Training Center (Cache Valley Workshop).
Married to Phyllis Rupard they raised three children, Cathy, Steve and Deb as they moved between Idaho, Oregon and Utah. In addition, Devoe always loved the outdoors especially hunting, fishing, camping and hiking. This love of the outdoors he shared with his family.
Some of his experiences include teaching on the island of Saipan for a year, taking up running and completing a Cache Valley marathon. With friends he climbed all the major peaks that surround Cache Valley.
After marring (Carlyn) Tim Hansen, they continued to enjoy the outdoors with backpacking trips giving way to trips in the motorhome. Tim’s family and the opportunity to spend time with them became an important part of Devoe’s life. This extended family along with his grandchildren Andrea and Jaden was the source of much pride and happiness.
Devoe was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bill. He is survived by his wife, Tim; children Cathy, Steve (Lee) and Deb (Garth); grandchildren Andrea (Grey) and Jaden. Tim’s children Lezlie (Paul & family), Tami (John & family), Michelle (Garth & family), Richard (Mary & family).
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 9, 2018 at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., Logan, with a visitation prior from 11 a.m. to noon.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made in Devoe’s name to the American Legion, Bridgerland Audubon Society or to a charity of your choice.
