Marva Sorensen Christensen

May 27, 1932 — June 29, 2017

Marva Sorensen Christensen, 85, passed away on June 29, 2017 reuniting with her husband of 64 years who had passed away 8 months prior. She was born May 27, 1932 in Salt Lake City to Edward and Minnie Sorensen. She, her 2 sisters, and 1 brother grew up in Salt Lake where she attended West High. She was very involved in many clubs and organizations including being in the choir and on the yearbook staff. After high school, she and her family moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where her father served as the LDS Mission President from 1949-1952. On April 10, 1953, Don and Marva were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple by Pres. Harold B. Lee.
They made their home in Bountiful, Utah where they raised their six children Steve, Craig, Lynda, Jed, Jodi and Tina. Don and Marva’s missionary spirit never died. They were called to serve as the mission president over the Copenhagen, Denmark mission from 1966-1969 taking their 5 children (at the time) with them and a second time in 1986 for 6 months when the mission president took ill. Marva was the perfect mission “mom” as she loved hosting dignitaries, apostles, and of course, the missionaries.
Marva was very active and spent her time reading, golfing, skiing, going to the gym, bowling, boating, traveling, and spending hours working on hundreds of puzzles while listening to her vinyl records. She had a love for music and enjoyed playing the piano and singing.
Marva’s love for the outdoors showed in her beautiful flower gardens and she usually had a vase of flowers in her home along with scented candles burning. She could often be found on her front porch enjoying her beautiful yard while waiting for family and friends to come and visit, then pleading for them not to leave. She loved and owned many animals from canaries to canines and would often sneak a carrot or an apple out to the horses in the pasture. She had such a fun personality, sense of humor and zest for life that there was never a dull moment when Marva was around. She truly was the life of this life’s party!
Marva dedicated her life to selfless service and leaves behind a legacy of helping others. She served on the Young Women’s General Board, Stake Young Women’s Presidency, was a Young Women’s leader, Primary pianist and served in multiple missionary callings. She loved volunteering at The Beehive House, This Is the Place Heritage Park, and the Church History Museum.
She will be terribly missed by all those with whom she came in contact with through the years. She is preceded in death by her husband Don and her sister Valeen Jensen. She is survived by her brother Russ Sorensen, her sister LaVerle Christenson, and her six children, Steve (Ronna) Christensen of Bountiful, Craig (LuJean) Christensen of Kaysville, Lynda (Jeff) Allen of Providence, Jed (Cindy) Christensen of West Bountiful, Jodi (Mark) Farber of Centerville, Tina (Mike) Eriksson of Heber and her 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
