Steven Herman Viehweg
On the afternoon of April 8th, our dear Steven H.Viehweg sat down on his favorite chair to take a nap, and passed away quietly in his sleep, at his home in Hyrum, Utah. He was 75. He was a beloved husband and father, and friend to many. Steven was a strong, but kind and gentle man, who had a profound effect on those that knew him well.
Steven was born in Preston, Idaho to Herman and Geneva Kennard Viehweg, on November 18th, 1939. He was raised on his parent's farm in Clifton, Idaho, with his seven wonderful brothers and sisters. If he wasn't working, he was most likely exploring the foothills behind the family home; hunting or fishing, or riding a bicycle down winding dirt roads (sometimes, with his eyes closed as much as possible, to test his memory).
In his early childhood, he developed a stutter, which stayed with him to some extent, for the rest of his life. This was a challenge that he carried with grace, and it served to teach him empathy and humility among other lessons. In spite of this, he was an eloquent speaker, and a very effective teacher.
Steve graduated from West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho in 1958; where he was Student Body President in his Senior Year. He received Varsity letters in football, basketball, and track & field. He met his lifelong sweetheart, Katherine Bastian, there in 1957. He was a senior, and she was a freshman. Kathy caught his eye, while standing in the lunch line. A fortuitous collision in the hallway served as introduction, and they have been together from that time on.
Steve and Kathy were married in the Logan LDS Temple, on August 10, 1961. Their first son Kerry, was born the following July, and 5 more children followed. Kathy has been always by his side, or behind the scenes, making sure he was supported. She would often anticipate his needs before he recognized them, and often provided for him in ways that he didn't have to think about. He loved her deeply, and found great strength and sanctuary in her; in heart, and mind, and soul.
Instilled in the home with a love of music by his sweet mother, Steve developed a strong and warm singing voice. He was the lead in his high school's musical, and was often asked to sing in church services, and on many other occasions. Some of his favorite hymns to sing were; O That I Were An Angel, As I Have Loved You, and The Holy City (Jerusalem, Jerusalem). Most recently he was a member of The Imperial Glee Club of Logan, Utah.
After high school, Steve went to BYU shortly and hated it; missing home and his sweetheart, he returned home to Cache Valley and became a True Aggie. He received his Bachelors degree and Masters degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology at Utah State University. He went on to receive a PhD in audiology at Northwestern University in 1968.
Steve became a Professor at Utah State University, teaching Communicative Disorders and Audiology for 33 years, from 1967 until his retirement in 2000. He loved teaching, and his students; and they loved him too. He was voted Professor of the Year at least twice, but was only eligible to receive the award once; in 1972. He considered this one the highest honors of his lifetime.
His professional life included the founding of Bridgerland Audiology. Although it was his private practice, it served as a teaching tool for many of his students, in various ways. Several were able to work with him, and his patients, and work closely alongside him, with the local Ear Nose & Throat Doctors. For many years, he practiced from the office of Dr. Douglas Hart, until Dr. Hart retired. Kathy also worked with him at the office for several years. Following his 'retirement', he continued to work for the office he founded, several days a week.
He served in many different capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is a true disciple of his savior Jesus Christ. Steve was perhaps best known for his service as a scoutmaster, a Bishop and a Stake President in the Hyrum, Utah Stake.
His love of the outdoors as a boy, developed into a lifelong love of fishing, hunting, and mountaineering. His favorite place in the world was the Grand Tetons, where he went often, and which were the subject of most of his many beautiful oil paintings.
Steve was never content to sit idle for long. A true renaissance man, any pursuit that he put his mind to, he excelled in. He would take on projects with laser-like focus, and see them through to completion. And then he loved to share it all with his family and friends. He had a strong Do-It-Yourself ethic, and among other things, he learned to sew his own (high quality) backpack and gear, to paint with oils, to tie and finish fly fishing rods (many for friends and family); to make fishing lures, to fix and finish his hunting rifles, family history (including detailed hand-drawn maps, drawings and diagrams) and too many other things to mention.
He and Kathy served a full-time LDS mission in the Indianapolis, Indiana mission from 2008 to 2009. And they travelled to Ghana in 2011, to provide clinical training in Audiology. They also served together as temple missionaries at the Logan Temple for several years.
He is survived by his beloved wife Katherine Bastian Viehweg, of Hyrum, UT; children Kerry Viehweg, Nampa, ID; Shane (Teri) Viehweg, Cokeville, WY; Boyd Viehweg, Salt Lake City, UT, Curtis (Diana) Viehweg, Nibley, UT; Jennifer (Dave) Sorensen, Chubbuck, ID. and Douglas (Celeste) Viehweg, Nibley, UT. Steve and Kathy are blessed with 13 grandchildren. Also survived by 6 brother and sisters; Fran Ladd, Marlene Owen, Douglas Viehweg, Lori Bennett, Kristy Campbell, and Becky Barlow. Preceded in death by his mother Geneva (1970), youngest brother Leon (1971), and his father Herman in (1982). He was also preceded by Kathy's mother and father; Alice and Elden Bastian, and three brothers in law and 2 nephews.
Steven's death has come as a shock to everyone. We take great comfort in the fact that he passed peacefully, in happiness, in his home with his eternal companion at his side; and in the understanding that he is now reunited with those of his family and friends that have preceded him. 'Til we meet again.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, April 13, 2015 at the Hyrum Stake Center; 600 South 200 East, Hyrum, UT. A viewing will be held Sunday April 12, from 6-8 pm at Allen-Hall Mortuary; 34 East Center Street, Logan, UT., and again on Monday, April 11th, from 10:30-11:30 am, at the stake center.
