Arla May Nyquist Hadfield

October 27, 1926 — October 26, 2016

Arla May Nyquist Hadfield passed away October 26, 2016, at her home in Preston, Idaho, due to incidents of age, after having lived alone with the passing of her husband in February. She has declined rapidly over the last several months.
She was born on October 27, 1926, in Hyrum, Utah. She would have turned 90 years old the next day. Her parents were Joseph Henry Nyquist and Johanna Louise Lauritzen Nyquist. She spent her early years helping her parents with raising chickens and selling eggs. She was the second child and daughter of the family. Her older sister, Arline Rust, spent many years with her, traveling, visiting, and enjoying life. The other siblings, Newell Joseph and Lee Boyd, their two younger brothers, were both soldiers, served in the Navy, and survived WWII.
She graduated from South Cache High School in 1945. She worked during the war at the Ogden Depot. She met Dean Hadfield at a dance in Hyrum and later married him on a cold winter night, January 30, 1948. That was 68 years ago. Her mother, Johanna made Dean promise that he would take care of her, which he did his entire life. In 1972, after spending 24 years in Logan raising seven children, they moved to Twin Falls, ID, where Dean began a successful career as an agent for New York Life Insurance. Eventually they moved to Preston, ID, where they had been married years earlier.
She was an active member in the LDS church with various roles: served as a Primary teacher, called to work in the Primary Presidency, nursery leader, food specialist in RS, Young Women calling, program and bulletin organizer, and also acted as visiting teaching supervisor. She attended church and the temple on a regular basis.
Her loyal and devoted sister, Lorna Arline, who is two years older, survives her. She cared for and supported Dean, especially in his later years. She is also survived by all seven children: Victoria Grace Brandt, Manti, Utah; Colin (Tracy Louise) Hadfield, Petersboro, Utah; Toni (Vern) Plott, Kimberly, Idaho; Trace Hadfield, Lisle, Illinois; Shelley (Don) Johnston, Woodland Park, Colorado; Sheila (Sterling) Lundgren, Hyrum, Utah, and Kristi (Ellis) Hawks, Middleton, Idaho. Dean and Arla have 25 grandchildren, and 46 great grandchildren.
We will miss her smile, her listening skills, the long conversations she had with her children. We miss her intuition, sense of humor, her loyalty, which made her so special as a wife, mother and grandparent. She was reserved and shy yet very proper in a social situation. She was always resolute in her opinions and quite stubborn in achieving her goals. She was worried she might not be able to travel when she married, but Dean took her places all over the world. We will always have her fond memories deep within our hearts.
Funeral services are at 11:30 on Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah. Viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Hyrum Cemetery.
