Dale Ensign Swan

August 2, 1941 — March 16, 2023

Dale Ensign Swan, 81, of Hyrum, Utah returned peacefully to his heavenly home on March 16, 2023 after a long and difficult battle with dementia.

Dale was born August 2, 1941 in Rupert, Idaho, to Ralph Ensign and Millie Eleanor Bateman Swan. The youngest of four, he became the baby brother to Owen, Gary, and Karleen.

Dale grew up working the Rupert farm with his dad -- milking cows, irrigating crops, and hauling hay. He played basketball and softball for his ward team, coached by his father, and participated in the All-Church Basketball Tournament at USU in 1958.

Carbon College in Price, Utah offered Dale a basketball scholarship in 1959 so he played ball and graduated with his Associates degree in 1961. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii from 1961-1963.

Upon his return from Hawaii, he attended Utah State University where he met Lyn Griffiths on a blind date. They were married on September 8, 1965 in the Logan Temple. Dale began teaching Math and coaching football at Declo High School, and finally completed his degree by attending night classes in Twin Falls and Pocatello, Idaho.

In 1973 Dale moved his growing family to Hyrum, Utah where he taught math and coached basketball -- first at South Cache Jr. High and later at Mountain Crest High School. Dale’s passion for tennis grew as he taught his children to play the sport. For 21 years he coached both boys and girls tennis at Mountain Crest High School, creating many lasting friendships. He also participated in countless tennis tournaments and taught summer tennis lessons to anyone who wanted to learn.

To feed his seven children on a teacher’s salary, he took extra work at night and during the summers. He hauled hay, did construction work for LeGrand Johnson, filled vending machines, and worked Security for EA Miller’s several nights each week, often taking his kids to work with him. He retired from teaching in 2004.

A life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Dale served in many capacities, including Bishopric member, High Councilor, Sunday School teacher, and as a Temple Ordinance Worker for 10 years. One of the highlights of his life was serving with Lyn as a senior missionary in Zambia, Africa from 2005-2007.

Dale is survived by his wife, Lyn, his daughters, Kerry (Shaun Peck), Kim (Rob Davidson), Shara (Darroll Young), his sons, Brandon (Shara Doolittle), Travis (Stacey Sessions), Bryan (Anna Iverson), and Kameron (Angela Osterlin), his sister, Karleen Kelso, 33 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, brother-in-law, Jim Kelso, sister-in-law Vicki Hansen Swan, and grandson, Brendan Dale Peck.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Stones and the staff at Blacksmith Fork Assisted Living Center who blessed Dale’s life with their loving care.
