Dortha Baxter Jessop

March 16, 1932 — June 4, 2017

Dortha Baxter Jessop, 85, passed away Sunday on June 4, 2017 in Providence, Utah due to congestive heart failure.
Dortha was born on March 16, 1932 at her grandparents’ home in Hyrum, Utah. She was the first of five daughters born to LaMont and Lucy Baxter. Dortha grew up in Hyrum. She attended Lincoln Elementary and South Cache High Schools.
She married Don Jessop of Millville, UT, on May 5, 1949, in Ogden, Utah. They were sealed on November 9, 1967, in the Salt Lake Temple.
The first few years of their marriage were spent on various Browning ranches throughout the states of Utah and Idaho.
After Don’s accident at the Ogden Stockyards which left him a paraplegic, they moved to Millville with their two young sons, Craig and Mont. While Don was at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake for almost 2 years, Dortha was by his side. She trained to become a nurse’s aide in order to care for Don at home and did so until his death in 1999.
In the following years, she worked various jobs, including grocery store cashier, waitress at Dewey’s, teacher’s aide and Outreach Supervisor for Head Start. She worked at Wurlitzer’s in the electronic piano division for about seven years, as well.
Her favorite job was working in the USU Bookstore as the Supervisor/Buyer for School and Office Supplies. In 1988, Dortha received the Robins Award for Classified Employee of the Year.
After her retirement, Dortha volunteered in the Gift Shop at the Logan Regional Hospital. Throughout her life, she served in various callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Until her health declined, Dortha loved working in her flower gardens and was fascinated with the birds that came to visit her bird feeders. Dortha loved cooking, reading, crocheting, and watching scary movies as well as British comedies. The last few years, she had also become a Colorado Rockies fan.
Dortha was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents, and one sister, Susan Price. Dortha is survived by her sons, Craig (RaNae) Jessop of Providence and LaMont (Yvonne) Jessop of Wellsville; her 7 grandchildren; and her 20 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lois Ann (Bill, deceased) Hoskins; Bonnie (MelRoy) Lemon; Donna (AJay) Pearson.
