Elizabeth Baugh Maughan

December 28, 1951 — October 19, 2021

Elizabeth Baugh Maughan, age 69, passed away peacefully with family and friends on October 19th, 2021, at her home in Providence, Utah. She fought courageously to overcome a diagnosis of brain cancer, Glioblastoma Multiforme, for over 16 months.

Born on December 28, 1951 in Logan, Utah, Elizabeth was the fourth of five children born to Wilford Parker Baugh and Maxine Petersen Baugh.

Elizabeth grew up in Cache Valley, living in both Logan and Providence during her youth. Liz had many friends growing up, spending time outside riding bikes, roller skating, and having fun. She looked out for those who needed a good friend, which she was, and she always stood up to those who were bullies.

She attended Sky View High School. She was active in the safety council, the ski club, and the FHA club. In 1970, she graduated. She was known and admired for her beautiful long dark hair that she kept throughout her whole life. In the years following high school, Elizabeth married Clark Maughan of Logan. They were married for 34 years, living in Logan and Providence while raising their family of five children. Becoming a mother was her favorite job, and it came very naturally to her.

A big part of Liz’s life involved the Baugh Motel, the family business. She began working as a teenager, planting the most beautiful flowers and helping her Dad, Billie. Eventually, she became the heart of the place, as she ran the front desk and managed the daily operations. Her employees had great respect for her. She loved meeting all the different, interesting people that came through the door. She was a smart business woman, providing hospitality and friendship. Her smiling face and bright brown eyes offered solace and kindness to those passing through the Baugh. She loved helping people feel welcomed, valued, important, and respected.

Elizabeth was a classy, kind, compassionate, loving, and fun soul. To her kids she was always mom or mama, and if you knew mama, you knew her spirited, quick-witted, fun-loving nature and very matter-of-fact demeanor. Her sense of humor was one in a million, just like her. Mom was an amazing cook and loved to be in the kitchen. She loved good food, music, concerts, dancing, conversing, and spending quality time with friends and family. Christmas and Thanksgiving were two of her favorite holidays. She loved to celebrate any occasion, especially with her grandkids. When she wasn’t dancing and having fun, you could find her tending her immaculate flower beds, her garden, and relaxing on the back patio with a glass of wine.

Her children and grandchildren are her proudest achievements and legacy. She will be forever missed and never forgotten by those she touched.

She is survived by her five children, Josh (Heather) Maughan, Benjamin Maughan, Sarah (Dirk) Oppermann, Zachary (Page) Maughan, and Molly Maughan; eleven grandchildren; her sisters Nancy (Craig) Hislop, Katheryn (Rik) Vernon, and brother Clyde (Gail) Baugh; and her ex-husband Clark Maughan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Margaret Baugh, and one grandchild.

The family extends special thanks to all her kind friends and neighbors who provided support and love during the many years. Thanks as well to the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute who tried so diligently to help her overcome cancer. Additional thanks goes out to hospice and her home health aids.
