Louis E. Wilhelm

April 13, 1940 — May 13, 2022

Louis E. Wilhelm passed away on May 13, 2022 at the age of 82. Dad was born April 13, 1940 in Logan, Utah, the son of Edmund L. and Lucille B. Wilhelm. He was the third of six children, 5 boys and 1 girl. He was raised on the family’s farm in North Logan. As a young boy he learned the value of hard work and responsibility, which he carried through his entire life. Prior to furthering his education, Dad served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from June 1960 to January 1963. He enjoyed sharing the gospel with the people of Hong Kong in the Cantonese language. He loved sharing many stories of his experiences there. When he returned home, he attended Utah State University for a short time. Due to the pending draft, he enlisted in the United States Army. As part of his army service, he studied Mandarin Chinese at The Presidio of Monterey, home of the Defense Language Institute. Dad spent 4 years active duty (1963-1967) in the U.S. Army as a Chinese Linguist, stationed in Okinawa and Fort Mead, Maryland.

Dad become acquainted with a cute girl, Effie Frank, in the summer of 1968. They were introduced through dad’s cousin. After dating and a short engagement, they were married August 30, 1968 in the Salt Lake LDS temple.

Together, they moved to Springville, Utah where Dad attended Brigham Young University and Mom worked as a registered nurse at BYU. Dad earned his Bachelor’s degree there in the Chinese language. Afterward, they returned to Cache Valley where he received his teaching certificate through Utah State University.

Dad and Mom made their life-long home in North Logan. This is where they raised their 3 children, Julie Wilhelm-Wiley (Corey), Shelly White (Kris), and Dan Wilhelm (Lindsey). Dad is the proud grandpa of 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

Dad was an educator in the Cache County School District for 30 years, beginning at Providence Elementary, and retiring from Summit Elementary in 1998. He also worked hard on his family farm where he took pride in raising beef cattle, alfalfa, and grain. Through example, he instilled in us the importance of hard work and dedication.

After retiring, Dad worked in the Logan Temple until his health made this challenging. He also enjoyed working on his farm, motorcycle trips, fishing, hunting trips, reading, drawing, and supporting his grandchildren in all their activities. Dad was a simple man. He loved a good joke, the outdoors, “pink cookies”, peanut M & M’s, Red Vines, Mountain Dew, watching the Utah Jazz, cherished friendships, his country; but most of all, his family and God.

Dad is survived by our good mom, Effie and their 3 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
