Louise Josephine Griebel Hampton

October 12, 1925 — November 2, 2018

Logan, Utah

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away”

On the night of Nov. 2, as her clock chimed the hour of 10pm, our sunshine,
Louise Josephine Griebel Hampton, 93, slipped from her pain and afflictions into the loving arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ and her husband, Jack who has waited 19 years to hold again his beloved “Gretchie”.

Louise was born on Oct.12, 1925 to a Bohemian mother, Minnie Anne Krshka Griebel and a German father, Louis William Griebel in Ballentine, Mont. A small town near the
Yellowstone River. She grew up in Ballentine and graduated with honors from Huntley High School in 1942 where she lettered in Basketball all four years.
When she was three years old, she would walk the couple of blocks to her Grandpa and Grandma Krskha’s large home that had been turned into a boarding house where she would sing and dance on the long table for pocket change. Her favorite song on the old Victrola was “Springtime in The Rockies”. She said that was her first paying job!

She attended Montana College in Boseman as part of the Accelerated WW II Cadet Nursing Program and graduated in 1945.
While working as a nurse, finishing her last bit of training at the VA Hospital in Sheridan, WY.
she met and fell in love with a tall handsome young solider, Jack C. Hampton who had just returned from the war. Thus, began a grand and adventurous life.

She lived, raised their children and nursed in 18 different locations as she followed Jack in his early law enforcement and lifelong military career which finally brought them from Germany to Logan, UT. Four of these years she raised us alone and while dad was in Korea and then later Vietnam.

Mom and dad were converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, having been introduced to the church by a friend who was an FBI Agent. Their Association was brief as Dad was assigned to duty in Germany.

After settling in Utah, they became reacquainted with the Church. They were sealed in the Logan temple with their children: Cheryl, Michael (deceased), Susan and Jack jr on April 24, 1964. Mom loved to serve in the church, especially with the youth. She was YW President, in the Primary Presidency, Sunday school teacher and a primary teacher many times. Teaching Primary was her favorite and she taught Primary in her ward on cliffside till she was over 83.

She started nursing at the old hospital in Logan then became the director of nursing at the Sunshine Terrace. She later became the Administrator at the Terrace for many years. After retiring she and Dad built a home at Star Valley Ranch where they spent most of the year and then bought a place in Borrego Springs, CA. where they wintered.

She was active in many clubs and organization thru her life. She had excellent leadership and organizational skills. She loved music and enjoyed opera, theatre and dancing.

She enjoyed sports and golfed in her retirement years. She helped dad when he was the golf pro at Star Valley Ranch Golf and Country Club run the two courses that they had.
She loved to watch football, horseracing, golf and baseball on TV. She loved to bet on the Super Bowl with family members.

Mom was the epitome of the Strong Woman. She has left this great legacy to her daughters, daughter-in-law, granddaughters and great-grand daughters. We celebrate and cherish her example. She was not only strong, but courageous, loving, nurturing, kind and fair with the gift of charity and compassion. She mothered everyone that she felt needed her. Her testimony and faith are pillars of strength to her family and friends

Louise is survived by her Daughter Cheryl Downs (Chad), son Jack Hampton (Karen) and their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren numbering totaling 55 with a little great-grandson due in 4 weeks . She is also survived by her sisters Clarice Harris, and Pat Thibut, both from Montana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and son, infant son, Michael David; Daughter Susan Douglass; parents, Louis and Minnie Griebel and a brother William (Bill) Griebel.

We who love her call her blessed.
