Martin Thornwell Smith

February 24, 1939 — December 12, 2019

Martin Thornwell Smith, 83, passed away December 12, 2019 at Ogden Regional Hospital in Ogden Utah, from a brief illness.

He was born in Abbeville, South Carolina on February 24, 1936. He was the seventh of nine children born to Samuel David Smith and Roberta Steele. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Abbeville High School in Abbeville, South Carolina, where he excelled in football. His hobbies were to hunt, fish, and watch all sports, and especially anything to do with BYU. He married his high school sweetheart Connie Winn on December 17, 1955 in Calhoun Falls, South Carolina. They added 5 children to their marriage. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 13, 1967. He served in the South Carolina National Guard.

He worked at Monsanto in Greenwood, South Carolina, then he moved his family to Utah in 1971 to work at Thiokol. He retired after 30 years from Thiokol in June of 1999. Then he later drove a school bus for Cache County School District. He served in many callings within the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his wife, Connie, their children Martin C. (Frances), Craig (Nancy), Risa (Randy), Michael (Gena), and Debra (Michael), 21 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren, Sisters Julia Petty (Abbeville, South Carolina), Pat Blau (Logan, Utah) and Brother Peter Smith (Rock Hill, South Carolina), and many other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Sam, Margaret, Harold, John, and Fleda, and granddaughter Hayley, and great granddaughter Berlyn. A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, Logan, Utah on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at 3701 S. 450 W. Nibley, Utah, on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. There will be a viewing held prior to the funeral on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.allenmortuaries.com
