Norman Ray Sunderland

August 1, 1933 — February 25, 2018

Norman R. Sunderland, “Norm,” of North Logan, UT, passed away on Feb. 25, 2018, at the age of 84. He was born Aug. 1, 1933 in Lone Wolf, OK the only child of Alva and Octava Sunderland. He married Marilyn Stanworth Engle on Aug. 27, 1971 and they were later sealed in the Manti, UT Temple. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He earned his PhD in Nuclear Engineering with a Major in Health Physics. He held various jobs for the government and universities in the Health Physics field.
He was awarded the Arthur F. Humm, Jr award in 1998. He was awarded Fellow Membership of the NRRPT in 1992 and served on the NRRPT Board of Directors for many years. Chief of the Dose Assessment Branch of the Nevada EPA, Board Member of the Utah Radiation Control Board. Invented the process to remove Transuranium and Plutonium contamination from the soil. He retired from Utah State University as the Director of Health and Safety. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various callings. He was an avid genealogist and loved singing, sports, gardening, fishing, hunting, his friends, his profession but he enjoyed his family most of all. His sense of humor and his service to others will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn; his combined family Melody Sunderland Rankin, Larry Sunderland (Debbie), Derreck Sunderland, Toni Engle Warner (Blair), Jim Engle (Jessica), JoLynn Engle Cook (Mark), Stacie Brian (Mark) and Tom Sunderland (Tessa); 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services are under the direction of Allen Mortuary. A viewing will be held Wed., Feb. 28 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at The LDS Church 1550 E 1900 N, North Logan, UT. Services begin at noon. Interment will be in the North Logan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Family History Library-Gifts. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.allenmortuaries.net
