Phil H Mitchell

March 19, 1950 — May 4, 2018

Phil H Mitchell, 68, of North Logan, Utah left the loving arms of his family here on earth on Friday, May 4, 2018 to be embraced by his daughter and parents. He met the challenge of cancer just like he met every other obstacle he encountered. After 13 years, 2 life-flights, 2 codes, and countless hospital stays he surpassed every expectation. He lived every day with gratitude for all he was still able to do. He lived to see all of his grandchildren born and made memories with his family and friends which will brighten and lighten the sorrow left by his passing.
Phil was born March 19, 1950 in Fillmore, Utah. He was the first son of Edward Lloyd and Helen Keller Mitchell. He loved growing up on the family farm where he learned the value of hard work from his father and love for his Savior from his mother. He spent many hours riding his cherished horse and generally enjoying freedom unheard of in today’s world.
He was a gifted athlete and lettered in 3 sports each year of high school. He broke several records running track and was selected as an All-State receiver his senior year by the Deseret News. Despite athletics and fun being a high priority, he graduated with honors from Millard High School. He cherished the friends he made in high school, and in time he married one of them.
He served a mission to the Philippine Islands, when it was only one mission. He cherished this experience and enjoyed a continued communication with the wonderful people he worked with there.
After his mission he returned to Utah State University. During these years he was sealed to his sweetheart, Colette Stott, on December 17, 1971 in the Manti Temple. This was the best decision either of them ever made. Their first daughter, Andrea, was born in Logan. He graduated from Utah State in dairy science and began working for the United States government in agricultural lending.
He was selected as Rookie of the Year and never looked back in his professional career. Advancements required the family to move around Idaho and almost each move brought an additional blessing to the family. JoAnna was born in Shoshone, Matthew in Grangeville, Camille in Soda Springs, and Lindsey in Twin Falls.
The family then moved to Richfield, Utah where Phil joined Production Credit Association. After Phil served as the branch manager in Cedar City, the family relocated to Logan, Utah where he was the Regional Vice President. Phil transitioned to Mortgage Banking at Zions Bank. His hard work led to top production honors. Wherever Phil worked he loved helping others and enjoyed the association of his coworkers.
Phil was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His faith strengthened and defined him. He was called to be a bishop at the age of 30. Among other callings, he served again as bishop and as a counselor in the North Logan Green Canyon stake presidency.
He felt his greatest calling was that of husband and father. He truly loved his wife and they spent many hours together in the mountains on horses or snowmobiles, in the car on road trips, or on cruise ships. His children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. If you had a couple of hours he would tell you about their virtues. He looked forward to family visits and vacations. Even on his worst days he was always ready to play a game with the kids.
Phil is survived by his wife, Colette, his children, Andrea (Scott) Woodhouse, JoAnna Lee, Matthew (Marlow) Mitchell, Camille (Nathan) Weaver, and son-in-law Scott Cantwell, mother-in-law Laurel Stott, sister Betty Jeanne (Dan) Bliss, and brothers Doyal (Jody) Mitchell, Mark (Carol) Mitchell, brothers-in-law Mike (Pam) Stott, Leo (Liz) Stott, Doug (Marilyn) Stott and 17 wonderful grandchildren and many nephews and nieces he adored. He was preceded in death by daughter Lindsey Cantwell, parents Lloyd and Helen Mitchell, father-in-law Ben Stott, sister-in-law Camille Stott and brother-in-law Ray Moran.
The funeral services will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at noon in the Green Canyon LDS Stake Center, 1800 North 400 East, North Logan, UT. A viewing will be held, Friday, May 11th, from 6-8 pm at the Allen Mortuary, 1850 North 400 East North Logan and prior to the services at the stake center Saturday from 10-11:30 am.
