Phyllis Schiess Atkinson

February 9, 1925 — September 12, 2018

Phyllis Schiess Atkinson, a resident of The Homestead in St. Anthony, Idaho, died September 12, 2018 at The Homestead at the age of 93. She was born on February 9, 1925 to Tofield Benjamin Schiess and Mary Kathrine Schiess in Providence, Utah.
Phyllis had 7 sisters and 1 brother. She attended school in Providence Utah, and graduated from South Cache High School and Seminary in 1943. She married Stratford Chugg Smith in Marysville, California in 1944. They had two sons, Paul Stratford Smith and David Lee Smith and two daughters, Kathleen Smith Ivie and Carolyn Smith Wetmore. She and Stratford were divorced in 1967. Phyllis married George Edward Atkinson in 1969 residing in Soda Springs, Idaho and later in Providence, Utah for many years.
Phyllis taught Primary for 20 years, Primary Counselor, Primary Chorister, Relief Society Chorister, Relief Society Teacher, Mutual Teacher (Beehives), Mutual Counselor, Relief Society President 2nd Ward, and Relief Society President 3rd Ward. Phyllis and George served as Stake Missionaries in the Providence South Utah Stake and as missionaries in the Dallas Texas mission. After George died in 2000, Phyllis moved to Pioneer Valley Lodge where she served as Family Home Evening Director, Visiting Teacher, and played the organ daily for the Lodge.
Phyllis is survived by children: Kathy Ivie, David Smith and wife, Bernice, Carolyn Wetmore and husband Harry, daughter in law Beth Smith, also Cheryl Bruce Danks who was member of their family for 2 years, grandchildren: Jocelyn Berge, Jodi Thurber and husband Randy, Lindsay Wetmore-Arkader and husband Alex, Nick Smith, and Paul Wetmore III and wife Haley, as well as 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, George Atkinson, son, Paul Stratford Smith, and son in law, Larry Lee Ivie.
Graveside services are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary and will take place Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Providence City Cemetery, 925 River Heights Boulevard, Logan, beginning at 11:00 am.
