Valarie Jeanne Smith Gessel passed away one day shy of her 90th birthday.
She was born on March 19, 1927 in Logan, Utah to Percy and Gladys Smith, the oldest of five children. She attended school in the Logan School District and the USAC. In her youth she worked at the Capitol Theater, and as a dental assistant. She married George Merrill Gessel on August 31, 1946. They were married for 60 years until his death in 2007 and are the parents of five children.
Valarie has been a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life. She served for many years in the Primary and the Relief Society. She and her husband served a service mission at the Deseret Industries, and also in the Adam-ondi-Ahman, Missouri Mission from 1999-2000. They served together in the Logan temple for 10 years.
Valarie enjoyed reading, knitting, Jazz games, baking, and sewing. She and Merrill were able to travel to Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, and many US cities, with her sister Janee and Dave Walker. She managed the family business for 50 years.
She is survived by her children: Peggy and Jim Reese, Roger and Wendy Gessel, Karla and Ross Draper, Jane and Jeff Holdsworth, and Sharon and Brett Carter; 29 grandchildren and their spouses; and 57 great grandchildren with 4 more on the way. Also surviving are her siblings: Joan and Boyd Humphreys, Janee Walker, Sidney and Jeneene Smith and Susan and James Randall; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007, her brother-in-law David Walker and Merrill’s sisters and brother-in-law, Ione G Hughes and Ila and Robert Bradshaw.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center Street in Logan. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the mortuary, and prior to the services at the mortuary on Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Services or the Perpetual Education Fund.
