Brent F. Roylance

Jul 11, 1946 — Oct 18, 2026

Hyrum, Utah

Brent Finley Roylance passed away Sunday October 18, 2026 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Brent was born July 11, 1946 to Finley Walton and Florence Hardy Roylance in Provo, Utah. He was the second of 5 children and grew up in Springville, Utah.

He married the love of his life, Laurel Young, in 1970. They settled in Hyrum and raised 6 children, later welcoming 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Brent received his bachelor's degree in education, but was a machinist by trade. He worked for several companies including Thikol, Nucor Steel, Bourns, and Central Valley Machine, and worked every shift imaginable.

Brent was an avid lover of sports and the outdoors, a love he passed onto his kids and grandkids. He grew up hunting and fishing as well as playing basketball, football and baseball (though baseball was his favorite). He coached his sons’ teams and never missed a chance to support his kids in whatever they were doing. He loved spending summer nights at the Hyrum and Smithfield ball parks with friends, enjoying a baseball game and a famous corn dog.

Brent was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as a bishop in his home ward and also in a married student ward. He had several opportunities to serve as a high councilman, and served in many other various callings throughout his life. He served his mission in the Southern States Mission, which at the time included Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. When anyone would complain about the heat in Utah, his immediate retort was "but it's a dry heat." After retirement, he and Laurel served a senior couple mission on the campus of Utah State University, which brought them so much joy and blessed them in so many ways. They loved the students they had the opportunity to help and support, and they made incredible friends with other senior couples serving alongside them. Brent never let a day go by without reading his scriptures. When presented with a quiet moment, he would often turn to scripture study. He taught us to love the scriptures, not always by word, but by his example. He loved our Savior, and it was apparent in every word and deed in his life.

Brent was a very humble man, dedicated to his wife and kids and to making an honest living with hard work. He was always serving those around him. In the winter, after shoveling his own driveway, he would make his way from house to house, ensuring all the neighbors’ driveways were clear as well.

Brent gained a love for birds and bird watching from his dad, and it is a love he passed on to his grandkids. He would sit them on his lap and watch patiently out the front windows to his array of feeders, watching as they flew back and forth. As they watched, they would consult his field guide together and Brent would read about the birds visiting that day.

Dad was always very stoic, never one to be in the spotlight or the true life of the party. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was full of wisdom and knowledge, and it always came from a place of love. In the last few years of his life, he developed a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor, which us kids and grandkids loved, but mom didn't think it was all that funny. He had a firm handshake and a smile that was filled with the warmth of his genuine love for you. If you were ever lucky enough to have him say “Pretty nice!”, it was the highest compliment, truly.

Dad was a teacher at heart, and never let an opportunity pass to teach us kids how to build, fix, make, or grow something. He never saw something that was broken that he couldn't fix, a problem he couldn’t solve, or a contraption he couldn’t build. He had corn growing down to a science, and it was the best corn around! His apple and peach trees were his pride and joy. During harvest season, if there was an apple on the tree that was ripe, he wouldn't let you leave without a grocery bag full. Whether you liked apples or not was none of his concern–he would tell you to pass them along to someone else.

Brent is survived by his loving wife, Laurel; their 6 children, Jason (Melissa), Holly Barney (Travis), Shane (Stacey), Melissa Hooton (Jason), Marc, and Shannon Berry (Sebastian); 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Michael (Patricia) and Karl (Deann); and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Finley Walton and Florence Hardy Roylance; his siblings, Ann Ostergaard (Clark) and John; and many other loved ones.

A special thanks to Steve Evans and the Sunshine Hospice team, as well as all of the employees at The Legacy House, especially those in the memory care unit. Dad was treated with kindness and dignity through every phase of this difficult time, and our family was handled with such gentleness and sincere caring. Each and every person helped make the last 6 months go as smoothly as possible, and for that we are eternally grateful.
