Carol Maxwell

November 24, 1933 — November 4, 2024

North Carolina

A beautiful cheery woman has gone ahead on the path of eternal life. Carol Elaine (nee Pack) Maxwell, age 90, quietly and gently passed away November 4, 2024, in the loving care of her family.

Carol was born November 24, 1933, in Los Angeles, California to Wesley Malin Pack and Helen Heppler. The sunshine of her youth was an integral part of her associations and her personality.

Forging a lasting, loyal and loving marriage, Carol and Harry John Maxwell, with their parents, but without air conditioning in their vehicle, traveled through the heat of the Mojave Desert to be married in the St. George Utah Temple on June 27, 1951.

The daughter of a nurseryman, her love of beauty and light profoundly influenced the lives of her children. Literally, she planted flowers and trees wherever they lived. Figuratively, she planted a love of sweet music and learning in her children. Although she only attended college for a brief time before joining her husband overseas in Germany and France during his military service in the Korean War, every place she lived she studied with the foremost organ, piano, voice and art teachers available. Herbert Nanney of Stanford University was one of her favorite organ teachers.

Carol was willing to relocate many times to support Harry in all his career efforts. They always chose to make major life decisions together, moving from France & Germany to California, Wisconsin, Michigan, and back to Wisconsin where he served in the capacity of Interim Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin’s 13 extension campuses during 1972. Their choice to accept an offer to serve in the administration at Ricks College under the Presidency of Henry B. Eyring was a joint decision based on their love of the Lord. Carol stood at his side as he eventually served as the Acting/Interim President of Ricks College, now BYU-Idaho, during the academic year of 1977-1978.

Together they had the courage to show their faith in Jesus Christ and His Gospel by serving Him through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the capacities of Mission Leaders in the Sao Paulo Brazil North Mission from 1978-1981. They loved their missionaries and the Brazilian people they worked with very much.

Upon returning from their mission, Carol was given opportunity to speak in a campus devotional in which she demonstrated her God-given verbal talents. Her rendition of a Brazilian folk tale at that time was very delightful and showed a bit of her background having grown up near Hollywood. This same cheery tone of voice and demeanor characterized her pleasant associations through the rest of her life.

Carol missed her husband tremendously after his unexpected death in 1984, leaving her widowed for over 40 years. Despite health challenges she continued in faith and fortitude. She remained dedicated to playing the piano every week in Relief Society until she was 88 years old. Carol has been a light and a blessing to her family and all who knew her.

Carol is survived by her four children: Sally (Edward) Ashton of Sugar City, Idaho, Harry John (Patti) Maxwell, Jr. of Cary, North Carolina, Cindy (George) Cromwell of Washington, Utah, and James Lawrence (Wendy) Maxwell of Heathcote, VIC, Australia. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by siblings: Deloy (Alison) Pack, Vernon “Bud” (Judy) Pack, and Vona “Bonnie” Pack.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Harry John Maxwell, one stillborn daughter, Elaine Maxwell, her parents, Wesley Malin Pack and Helen Heppler, and a brother and sister-in-law, Wesley Don “Don” Pack and Marie Pack.
