Clarence Ray Smith, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by his daughters on April 28 2025. Clarence was born on October 29,1932 in a small country town, Malad, Idaho, to Morris Albert and Eveyln Tracy Smith. He spent his early life growing up in Yost, Utah and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. On a dare he met his wife, Phyllis, in Snowville, Utah and she was smitten. Clarence and Phyllis were married on April 16 1953, were later sealed in the Logan Temple and were married 71 years. Together they raised three daughters in Escondido, California.
Clarence entered the army on December 2, 1952 and served in Korea. He achieved the rank of corporal, awarded the Korean service medal with one gold star, and received multiple other military service awards. He spent 21 months and 10 days serving his country and was forever after fiercely loyal to his country and supportive of all those who also served.
Clarence graduated from Utah State University in June, 1958 with a degree in accounting. He spent two years working for Thiokol, then moved his family to California where he had a successful career in the aerospace industry and ended his career as President and CEO of ATI Industries. Clarence was very civic minded and was a member of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club of Escondido and the Escondido Police Posse among other various organizations.
Clarence’s interests were many and in his final days he often talked about how much he missed his favorites: horseback riding, golfing and fishing. He was a voracious reader, gardener and as his mobility became limited was devoted to family history research.
Clarence is survived by his daughters, (Debbie), (Patti) and (Annette), his grandchildren, Corey, (Sarah), Brad, (Cherali), Chad, (Eddie), Taylor, (Andrew), Jenna and Matt, and his great-grandchildren, Ethan, Averi, Dexter, Jonah, Ivy, Sully, Miles, Jasper, Cannon, Ava and Kiera. He is preceded in death by his wife (Phyllis), granddaughter (Jamie), and grandson (Todd).
