Clyde Fletcher Poppleton

February 11, 1940 — February 22, 2026

Providence

Clyde Fletcher Poppleton, 86, of Providence, Utah, returned peacefully to his Heavenly Father on February 22, 2026, in Logan, Utah. He was born on February 11, 1940, in Wellsville to William Barker and Myrtle Louise Fletcher Poppleton, the youngest of five children: Mary Louise, Dan, Thelma Mae, and Beverly.

Clyde’s early years were humble and simple, shaped by a small Wellsville home without indoor plumbing and warmed by a coal stove he tended each morning. His mother’s large garden and his father’s hunting provided for the family, and though they lacked many conveniences, their home was filled with gratitude, resourcefulness, and love. Some of Clyde’s sweetest memories were of fishing and hunting with his father—moments that taught him reverence for the outdoors and appreciation for God’s creations.

At age five, Clyde became seriously ill with Rheumatic Fever. Bedridden for six weeks, he was accompanied by a loyal cat who never left his side. The illness weakened his legs so severely that he had to relearn how to walk. Even as a child, he met hardship with quiet courage and faith—traits that would define him throughout his life.

Clyde attended Wellsville Junior High and graduated from Cache High School in 1958. At 18, he began working for Thiokol Corporation, where he was placed in the lab analyzing rocket propellant materials. In 1962, he was drafted into the military. Because of his high security clearance, he worked alongside top scientists on gas and germ warfare research, later serving in Panama and Maryland before completing his active duty.

After returning home, Clyde resumed his work at Thiokol. A coworker introduced him to Narva Malmberg of Clarkston, and their connection was immediate and deep. They were married in the Logan Utah Temple on October 20, 1965, beginning a life centered on love, faith, and family. In 1967, they settled in Providence, where Clyde would live for the rest of his life. Their son Joel was born in 1970, and together father and son created countless memories—hunting, camping, fishing, and building friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Narva passed away suddenly in 1997, a loss that broke Clyde’s heart but not his faith. In 1999, he married Janice Hyde, who tragically passed from cancer only months later. Through each loss, Clyde remained gentle, humble, and anchored in his testimony of Jesus Christ.

In time, with encouragement from his sister Beverly, Clyde met Delores June Barkdull. She said yes to a phone call, then a date, and eventually to marriage. They were married for time in the Ogden Utah Temple on March 29, 2001, and later sealed in the Logan Temple in 2011. Through Delores, Clyde’s family grew to include her daughters—Debbie, Kris, and Marie—and their children, whom he embraced wholeheartedly.

Clyde retired from Thiokol after 42 years, calling it his “second home.” Retirement brought adventures with Delores—traveling, camping, and spending winters in Yuma, Arizona. Their honeymoon in Florida during 9/11 became a story they shared for years.

When Delores developed Parkinson’s and later dementia, Clyde cared for her with unwavering devotion. Even after she moved to a memory care facility, he visited twice a day to help feed her. His love, patience, and selflessness extended her life and brought her comfort until her passing in 2018. His service to her was a living example of Christlike love.

Clyde had a lifelong curiosity for technology and electronics. He built a console TV, tinkered with gadgets, and always tried to understand how things worked. He loved gardening like his mother, sharing his abundant harvest with neighbors, friends, and family. After the passing of his mother and Narva, he found peace in tatting, creating beautiful doilies that became treasured gifts.

People were drawn to Clyde because of his gentle, humble spirit. He was never angry, never harsh. He listened with kindness, spoke softly, and judged no one. His goodness was quiet but unmistakable.

His faith was the foundation of his life. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held a strong testimony of Jesus Christ. His favorite calling was Assistant Ward Clerk, where he served diligently and found joy in supporting the bishopric and connecting with members. He lived his faith not through grand gestures, but through daily acts of service, patience, and love.

Clyde also loved studying weather patterns, and many people called him for updates on storms or precipitation. He enjoyed classic movies—westerns, WWII films, Hallmark stories, and Korean dramas. But nothing brought him more joy than time with his family and grandchildren. He loved teaching them skills he had learned, sharing his talents, and watching them grow.

Clyde leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, faith, and quiet strength. He is preceded in death by his wives Narva, Janice, and Delores; his parents, William and Myrtle; and his sister Thelma. He is survived by his children Joel M. Poppleton, Deborah F. Jones, Kris F. Shields (Dean), and Marie F. Taylor (Loren); his siblings Mary Louise, Dan and Beverly; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

He will be greatly missed here, but his reunion on the other side will be even more glorious, and his posterity will always stand as a testament to the love and values he carried throughout his lifetime.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Providence 4th Ward Chapel, 155 North 100 East Providence. A viewing will take place prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30 AM.
