David Marion Cheney, 89, passed away in the early morning hours of December 26, 2025 following a bout with pneumonia.
He was born at home in Archer, ID on December 25, 1936 to Alice Lee Rawls and Marion Selar Cheney. He was the third child of thirteen and the first born son.
When he was 20, he served an LDS mission to the Central Atlantic States Mission. That mission included North Carolina, Virginia and part of West Virginia.
He attended and graduated from Ricks College which is where he met and married his sweetheart, Ann Cook. They were married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on August 12, 1960.
He then attended and graduated from Utah State University. He worked a couple of years for Boeing, in Huntsville, Alabama, then was hired at Thiokol where he worked as a Computer Specialist. This allowed them to move back to Cache Valley where they spent a few years in River Heights and the last 55 years in Hyde Park. Dad was very intelligent and when others were stuck on a problem at work, Dad was the one that they went to for help. Dad took early retirement in 1998 to help care for his son, Mark, as he went through his cancer treatments.
Dad was a lifelong learner, which led him to develop many new skills and hobbies. He was a camper, hiker, gardener, photographer, rock hounder and rock polisher, leather worker, carpenter, and furniture refinisher, to name a few. He taught us about birds, flowers, nature, hard work and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved getting out his Atlas and looking up places that we talked about.
He served in many different callings throughout his life including Bishopric, Stake Presidency, Young Men’s leader, Temple Ordinance worker in the Logan LDS Temple, Ward Temple and Family History Leader, and Greeter. He never missed a month home teaching or ministering. He magnified every calling he had.
He and mom served a mission in Des Moines, Iowa. They served with the Genealogical Society and spent 18 months photographing old records found in the courthouses in the area. Dad was extremely meticulous in the work and they experienced miracles while they were serving. They were also able to help with the Nauvoo LDS Temple open house while they were there.
Dad started indexing years ago and in April 2025, he was recognized as being in the top 1% of all indexers in the world. At that time he had indexed 1,292,251 names. Indexing changed at that time and Dad learned the new program and had already verified over 100,000 names at the time of his passing. He spoke in sacrament meeting the end of November and shared his testimony of this great work!
Dad was the best father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He took time to play with us and teach us. He supported us in all of our activities and encouraged us to get as much education that we could. Dad was a man of God. He lived his life following Christ’s example of obedience, faith, humility and quietly serving everywhere and everyone that he could. He was genuinely kind to all he came in contact with.
He is survived by his children Sherrie (Jared) LeCheminant and Dale Cheney, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Twila Williams, Nita Hirschi, Lowell (GeNeil) Cheney, Delbert (Kathy) Cheney, Darrell (Kathy) Cheney, Nolan (Mary) Cheney Lynn (Cindy) Cheney, Mardell (Heidi) Cheney, and Nadine (Ed) Ward.
He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Ann Cook, his children Mark David (Lynnette Haltiner) and Marcia Cheney, a granddaughter, Amy Cheney, his sisters Marie Lauritzen, Doreen (Reldon) White and his brother Julian Cheney.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 2nd from 5-7 pm at the Allen Hall Mortuary located at 420 E 1800 N North Logan, UT and again on January 3rd at the Aspen Hills church from 10:00-10:30 am. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. The address for the church is 64 E Center Hyde Park, UT.
In lieu of flowers, please consider spending time working on your family history.
