DeVerle Charles Hoth passed away at his home in Smithfield, Utah, on July 25,2025, just two days after his 92nd birthday. He was born July 23, 1933, in his parent’s home in Logan Utah, the first of six children to Charles Frank Hoth and Olive Maddox Hoth.
DeVerle enjoyed his early years living very close to all his cousins in an area affectionately known as Little Berlin, on 6th East and 8th North in Logan. He was baptized at age eight into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Logan LDS Temple and was an active member all his life.
DeVerle received his education in the Logan City schools and immediately after high school, went to work for his Uncle Irv at Maddox Ranch House in Brigham City. He was drafted into the army during the Korean War in 1953 and served an LDS mission in 1955 in the New England States. Three days after he returned home from his mission, DeVerle met his sweetheart, JoAnn Jorgensen, (at his brother’s wedding reception) and they were married 6 months later in the Logan LDS Temple on March 7, 1958.
After their marriage, DeVerle worked at Maddox and Thiokol before starting his own restaurant in Hyde Park, Utah, in 1974, “DeVerle’s Juniper Inn”. He and JoAnn, along with each of their children, worked hard to make it a successful, well-known, family restaurant in Cache Valley for 30 years. He created “DeVerle’s All Purpose Seasoning” to use at Juniper Inn, and many customers asked to buy a container of it to take home. It was later bottled and sold at local grocery stores. Juniper Inn was destroyed by fire in February 2003. DeVerle will be remembered for closing his restaurant on Sundays for the Lord, and Mondays for his family.
As hard as his family worked, they also loved to play hard together. DeVerle loved the outdoors; fishing, hunting, camping, boating, golfing, motorcycling, playing fast-pitch softball, and watching his sons play football. He and JoAnn loved to travel and were avid Aggie sports fans. They were members of the Big Blue Club and followed the Aggie teams to many locations to watch them play. DeVerle was a wonderful artist, creating many beautiful oil paintings and turning wood vases, bowls, pepper grinders and candle holders.
In 1993, DeVerle and JoAnn were called on an LDS mission to Tallahassee, Florida. Upon their return, they served as ordinance workers in the Logan LDS Temple for two years. They truly enjoyed their church service and made many lasting friendships.
They built a cabin in Star Valley, Wyoming, and later purchased a winter home in St. George, where they often hosted family and friends, making lots of great memories.
In their later years, DeVerle and JoAnn could be found most afternoons having lunch or dinner at his son’s restaurant, Juniper Take-Out, reminiscing with customers about the good old days. DeVerle will be remembered as a hard-working, somewhat stern employer and father who deep down was very soft-hearted.
DeVerle is survived by his children, Kirk DeVerle (Maria Keeler), Kelly Wayne (Jenifer Jamison), Tracy Leland (Kim Jones), Jason Charles, and Sherisse Jamison Darrough (Greg Darrough) all of Smithfield; 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond (Kathy), and Valden (Ann), brother-in-law, Larry Liljenquist, and sister-in-law, Genice Hoth.
He was proceeded in death by his sweetheart JoAnn, an infant daughter Kathrine, son-in-law Jason Jamison, his parents, brother Jay Hoth, sisters, Charlene Liljenquist, and Lila Thompson (Mel).
