Donald Hall Steele

Donald Hall Steele passed away on August 26, 2026 in Logan, Utah. He was born April 20, 1939 in Panguitch Utah to Nina Hatch Steele and Donald Hall Steele, who died 33 days before his son was born.

He loved sports and participated in Track, Baseball and Basketball in High School including the Panguitch High School State Championship Track and Field and Basketball teams. He insisted he lived the plot of the movie “Hoosiers” because little Panguitch defeated a great Bingham H.S. team in the George Albert Smith Field-house before a capacity crowd in 1957. That same year, in the State Track Meet, at the University of Utah Stadium, he broke the oldest Utah High School record on the books (44 years) in the 220 yard dash and went on to attend BYU on a track scholarship.

He received a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Utah College of Law in 1966. In 1964, during law school, he was sealed to Linda Bishop Steele by President Thomas S. Monson in the Logan Temple. They were married for 62 years during which time they worked as a complete team in anything and everything. Don was employed as a Special Agent with the FBI while it was still fun, interesting and dramatic. His additional duties, for many years, included serving as Principal Legal Advisor and as a Police Instructor. Among other things, he worked fugitive cases in Los Angeles and was Case Agent on the Exxon Valdez grounding and oil spill investigation in 1989. He loved his job and the people of the FBI. He served for 28 years in Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, California, Anchorage, Alaska and Salt Lake City until his retirement in 1994. 

Sixteen of the family’s most rewarding years were spent in Anchorage where their six children grew up with all the beauty and adventure of Alaska.

In 1992 he received the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service award at a Washington D.C. ceremony attended by his family.

Don was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings including 3 times as Bishop and service in several Stake and Mission Presidencies. He spent six years of his life as a full-time Missionary. As a young adult he served in the Canadian Mission. He later served in the North Carolina Charlotte Mission with Linda and, also, with Linda, as President of the England London Mission from 1994 to 1997. While there, they worked with a total of nearly 600 missionaries from 28 different countries. They dearly loved them all and their relationship with them continued for the rest of his life. 

He was blessed with a long life and a much-loved family. He had a terrific Mother and Grandparents. Linda was always the most important part of his life. The children, their spouses and his grandchildren/great grandchildren were a constant blessing. 

He is survived by his wife, Linda Ann Bishop Steele, and their children Donald Hall Steele, Jr. (Cynthia), Sherrie Ann Boudousquie (Bruce), Ann Nicole Kennington (Lynn), and Kelly Ann Thorne (Rick), 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his son David who died in 1991 and by his son Michael who died in 2026. He was also preceded in death by so many of his true and interesting friends.

He was never a fan of either funerals or viewings. He believed that the saying, “It’s his funeral” meant that he could personally decide not to have one. At his request, a private celebration of life will be held for immediate family members. He is interred in the Garland, Utah Cemetery near their beloved sons David and Michael.
