Dr. Harmon J Eyre

May 17, 1941 — May 31, 2025

Salt Lake City

Harmon J Eyre, MD, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31st in Salt Lake City from complications of prostate cancer.

Harmon was born on May 17, 1941 in Escalante, UT to Sherman and Lasca Eyre. He was raised in a large family (4 brothers and a sister) in Escalante, Panguitch and Logan. Harmon first met his beloved Julie Sears in the 7th grade, though their courtship didn't begin until after high school graduation. They married on June 10, 1960.

Harmon was educated at Logan High, Utah State University (BS, 1962) and the University of Utah (MD, 1966). An avid reader who always had a book in his hands, his thirst for knowledge was a defining characteristic throughout his life. From medical school, he went to Johns Hopkins University, the NIH and found his way back to Utah as a faculty member in the medical school. He specialized in hematology and oncology.

Harmon spent his professional life in service to others. Beginning in the early 1970s, Harmon spent tireless hours volunteering for the American Cancer Society. He eventually rose to become the volunteer President of the Society in 1988 and then the Society’s Chief Medical Officer from 1993 to his retirement in 2008. His unparalleled knowledge, which he readily shared with anyone, made him a natural mentor and guide. He was always willing to offer advice and support, particularly to those who were sick or needed help.

As CMO at the American Cancer Society, Harmon left significant contributions in three focus areas; cancer prevention and control, cancer research and policy advocacy. His dedication in these roles profoundly impacted the lives of American citizens and beyond. In cancer prevention, he was passionate that lifestyle was a key to saving lives and invested in enhanced epidemiology and surveillance presence to concentrate efforts and investments where they would be most effective. In research, he focused on supporting promising young cancer researchers thereby helping launch new generations of cancer investigators. As an advocate for cancer prevention and control, Harmon worked with US Presidents and Congress to pass legislation providing access to early cancer detection saving countless lives. Furthermore, he was a significant driving force behind indoor clean air initiatives and the resulting societal shift that has led to smoke-free public establishments, a legacy that continues to protect countless lives.

Beyond his professional dedication, Harmon had a deep love for exploring the world. He and Julie embarked on countless adventures, traveling around the world many times and visiting all continents. Their shared passion also led them to explore the beauty of their own country, visiting 68 national parks together. They extended their love for travel to their family by taking their children and grandchildren on world travels.

Harmon passed 10 days before he and Julie could celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. He was the father of four (David (Gena); Suzanne; Brian; and Richard (Delphine)), and grandfather of four (Hannah, Will, Miles and Logan). He is survived by his brothers Tony, Steve, and Douglas. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, and a son, a brother and sister. He will be interred in a private graveside service.
