Eldon Riggs Hugie

July 17, 1932 — January 10, 2024

Logan, Utah

Eldon Riggs Hugie, 91, passed away at home in Logan, Utah, on January 10, 2024. He was born July 17, 1932, in Logan, Utah to Edna Riggs and Albert Hugie Jr.  During his youth, Eldon contracted polio and the family was told that he would never walk again. Through his and mother’s determination and hard work, he fully recovered, which set a precedence of hard work and determination that served him well throughout his life.  He later played football and basketball at Logan High. He developed a love for reading and participated on the debate team. During the summers, he worked with his father in the Forest Service.

Eldon graduated from Logan High School and attended Utah State University for one year prior to marrying Cleo Tibbitts on June 29, 1951, in the Logan LDS Temple.  He graduated from Utah State in 1954 and entered the U.S. Air Force as an officer for a 3-year period that included flight training in Bartow, Florida, and Big Spring, Texas, intelligence school for one year at Wichita Falls, Texas, and a final year at Shaw AFB in South Carolina. In 1957 the family moved to Berkeley, California for 3 years where Eldon completed law school at University of California, Berkley on full scholarship. During their 3 years at USU and 3 years at law school, the family lived each summer at Card Ranger Station in Logan Canyon where they worked as recreational assistants for the U.S. Forest Service. Following law school, the family lived in Bakersfield, California, from 1960 through 1968 where Eldon practiced law with a focus on taxation and business matters; then spent 9 years in Monterey, California, where Eldon was a principal in a cattle operation with ranches and feedlots in California, Hawaii, Texas and Australia; and then lived in Shady Cove, Oregon, where they resided on their Rogue River Ranch for over 10 years before returning to Bakersfield, where they resided until they moved to Logan in 2017.  Cleo passed away in September 2017.  Eldon continued his law practice until his death and married Shirley Perkins in October 2019.  Shirley was a life-long friend of Eldon and Cleo, and a tremendous blessing in Eldon’s life who loved and cared for him in his final years. Eldon enjoyed his relationship with Shirley’s family, including her surviving children, Bradly Walton, Lynnea Lee Boyd, and Lorynn Walton.

Eldon was a man of faith, which guided his life as he served his church in many capacities over his lifetime.  He was very generous and helped family members, friends and others in times of need.  He enjoyed the outdoors, including several wilderness river float fishing trips in Alaska with family members and friends.

Eldon is survived by his wife, Shirley, and by his five children: Michael in Bakersfield, California; Susan Richardson (Luke) in Portland, Oregon; David (Laila) in Shady Cove, Oregon; Robert (Connie) in Keizer, Oregon; and Patti Chamberlain (Eric Olson) in Eagle, Idaho; by his sister, Jan Thorpe (Eric), in Bountiful, Utah; and by his brother, Roy Hugie in Hyrum, Utah. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 20th at 12 p.m. at the LDS chapel, 1350 Mountain Road, Logan, Utah.
