Flora May Heaton Cheney, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, in Petersboro, Utah, surrounded by her children.

Flora May was born on May 11, 1932, in Alton, Utah, to Harold Hoyt Heaton and Ellen Johnson Heaton. Born at home with the assistance of midwives, Flora May was the fourth of five children. Her mother passed away when she was only 5 years old, a loss that shaped her strength, compassion and resilience throughout her life.

As a young girl, Flora May was known as a spirited tomboy who loved playing football with the boys in town, much to the concern of the women who tried their best to help her become a proper lady. One of her favorite childhood responsibilities was herding her uncle’s cattle morning and night. She loved riding horseback across the fields, often lying across the horse’s back while reading her beloved books while the horse followed the familiar trail home.

Flora May’s family moved from Alton, Utah to Salt Lake City during her high school years. After graduating high school, she attended and graduated from BYU. She later served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. After her mission, she settled in Salt Lake City where she met the love of her life, Richard Cheney. The two were married on March 20, 1959, beginning a devoted partnership centered on faith, family, service, and hard work.

Together they raised six children: Nathan (Ruth) Cheney, Clayton (Sandra) Cheney, LeeAnn (Roger) Turner, Daniel (Deborah) Cheney, Matthew (Jeri) Cheney, and Rebekah (Craig) Smith. Flora May’s posterity was one of her greatest joys. She leaves behind 26 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren who will continue to cherish her memory and example.

Flora May had many talents and interests. She loved playing the piano and organ. She was also known for her delicious homemade bread, famous potato salad, and canned raspberries grown on her cherished “Down Under Farm,” which brought family and friends together around her table. She was always serving others through countless quiet acts of kindness.

She was a devoted fan of both BYU and the Utah Jazz.

Her faith was central to her life, and she dedicated herself to temple work and missionary service, serving three missions.

She loved puzzles and was a gifted teacher both formally and through quiet example. Whether through conversations, service, or the puzzle pieces she so often shared, she found ways to teach patience, perseverance, and love.

Above all, Flora May cherished her family. Her strength, wisdom, humor, and unwavering love created a legacy that will continue for generations.

She was preceded in death by her sweet husband Richard, grandson Caleb, parents, and loved ones who welcomed her home.

The family expresses gratitude for the love, care, and support shown to Flora May throughout her life and during her final days.

Her life was a beautiful example of faith, hard work, kindness, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
