Gary Ferral Ogilvie

March 14, 1948 — July 6, 2025

Laketown, Utah

Gary Ferral Ogilvie, 77, passed away in the wee hours of Sunday Morning, July 6, 2025 at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah from complications of kidney cancer.

He was born March 14, 1948 in Salt Lake City, the first child of Ferral and Cleone Jones Ogilvie. He collected a few siblings over the next few years: Janette (dec'd), Linda, Robert (dec'd), Anne, Blaine, Yvonne, John, and Paul.

He graduated from Springville High School in 1966. While there he participated in wrestling and track, and FFA.

He married Edith Weaver on July 2, 1970 in the temple at Idaho Falls, Idaho. Over the next 55 years, they lived in Springville, Provo, Wendover, Meadowville, Randolph, Laketown, West Valley City, Logan, Salt Lake City, Brigham City, Ogden, and finally returned home to Laketown, Utah. During this time he accumulated six children: Heather, Deborah, Russell (Amy), Benjamin, Thomas, Dennis (Amber); and ten grandchildren.

Gary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served a full-time two-year mission in Ireland. He was an ordinance worker for over 13 years in the Logan, Utah Temple. In between, he was always serving in one calling or another. He was Bishop of the Logan 15th Ward in the early 90s.

He worked for 34 years in law enforcement, serving at city, county, and state levels. In the late 70s he was a Highway Patrol Trooper in Rich County. In the early 80s he was Sheriff of Rich County. In the early 90s he was the Department of Corrections Regional Administrator for Adult Probation and Parole, for Cache, Box Elder, and Rich counties (Region 1).

His hobbies included woodworking, motorcycle riding, target shooting, camping and hiking--particularly with his family, and amateur astronomy.

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, and preceded in death by his parents and two of his siblings.

If Gary wanted a flowery obituary, he should have given me more notice.

The family appreciates the care given by the ER team at Logan Regional Hospital, the Life Flight crew, the ICU team at McKay-Dee Hospital, and the IH Hospice service.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday, July 15 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E Center in Logan. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at 11:00 am at the LDS Church in Laketown, Utah 115 South 100 East, with a viewing prior from 9:30-10:30 am.
