Gene LeRoy Mortensen, 90, of Providence Utah passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at Cache Valley Assisted Living in Providence, UT. Gene spent all but his last few weeks in his home with his bride of over 64 years.

Gene was born on May 19, 1935, in Salem, Idaho, to Christian Charles Mortensen and Pearl Evelyn Chandler. He was the sixth of nine children. He graduated from Bonneville High School (ID) in 1953. He joined the Air Force and served for four years as an electronics technician based at Ellsworth Air Force Base. After his military service, Gene served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark. He then attended and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in electrical engineering.

Gene married his best friend, Sandra Sargent, on June 9, 1961, in the Logan Temple. They were blessed with five children: Melanie (Neil) Miller of South Weber, UT; Larry (Cara) Mortensen of Wellsville, UT; Melinda (Paul) Parry of Morgan, UT; Stacie (Brian) Keller of Providence, UT; and Stefanie (Darin) Ewer of Providence, UT. Gene and Sandra raised their family primarily in Pleasant View, UT, and have a posterity that includes 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Gene worked for the Air Force branch of the U.S. Government as a civilian electrical engineer and later as a Senior Executive at Hill Air Force Base, UT, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH. After retiring, he worked for Utah State University with the Space Dynamics Lab.

Gene and Sandra served two Church missions in Kirtland, OH and a mission in Oakland, CA. Gene was always a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in every calling he had. He especially enjoyed teaching the Gospel Doctrine class and sharing his testimony of Jesus Christ. His life is an example to all who knew him.

Gene loved spending time in Yellowstone, at his cabin at Bear Lake, and relaxing in Hawaii. He had a deep love for his country, and he was passionate about supporting his Utah State Aggies, but most of all, he loved his family.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and each of his siblings.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 7th at 11:00am at the Fox Ridge Ward Building, 155 N 100 E, Providence, UT. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, January 6th from 6:00-8:00pm at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center St, Logan, UT and from 9:30-10:30am prior to the service at the church.
