With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Harold Robert Bence Jr., affectionately known as Bob, who peacefully departed this world on June 25, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on January 25, 1933, to Harold Robert Bence Sr. and Edna Juanita Bence, Bob lived a life marked by devotion to family, dedication to community, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.
Bob met the love of his life, Barbara Jane Nell, and was married in the quaint town of Three Rivers, CA. They wed on January 30, 1954, embarking on a remarkable journey of 66 years filled with love, mutual respect, and shared dreams. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, raising three successful children.
A lifelong learner, Bob earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by a Teaching Credential and a Master's in Counseling. He dedicated much of his professional life to the California Youth Authority, where he was a highly respected teacher, inspiring countless young minds with his wisdom, patience, and kindness.
Bob's sense of duty extended beyond his professional endeavors to his service in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954. Achieving the rank of Corporal, he was honored with a Korean Service Medal with three Combat Campaign Stars, a UN Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal & Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal, a testament to his courage and exemplary conduct.
Bob's life was a testament to his faith, as he was actively involved in numerous Bible-preaching churches, serving his spiritual communities with passion and dedication. His commitment to education and service was further exemplified through his role on the Calaveras County Board of Education and his heartfelt volunteer work with Hospice and other charitable organizations.
Though Barbara and their beloved grandson, Cortlan Bence Lininger, predeceased him, Bob's legacy continues through his children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the indelible impact he had on all who knew him. His love, wisdom, and generosity will forever remain in our hearts, a guiding light in the lives of those he touched.
May his soul find eternal peace with Jesus, reunited with his beloved Barbara and Cortlan, and may we find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the legacy he leaves behind.
