Janel Godfrey Heaps

June 27, 1936 — April 2, 2026

Smithfield

Janel Godfrey Heaps, the heart of our home, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026 in Smithfield, Utah surrounded by loving family members. Janel was born on June 27, 1936 in Cornish, Utah. She was the second of four children born to Wendel George Godfrey and Mabel Myler Godfrey. Janel’s childhood was filled with the good things that come with living on a family farm in Cache Valley. She learned about love, hard work, service, and compassion from devoted parents, grandparents, siblings and relatives who believed in supporting and sacrificing for each other.

Janel attended Cache County schools and graduated from North Cache High School in 1954. While in school she served as the Senior Class Secretary. In 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Orrie Heaps in the Logan Temple.

Janel and Lloyd began their married life in Logan, then moved to Idaho Falls, Boise Idaho, and Grand Forks, North Dakota for a short time before returning to Smithfield, Utah to settle down and raise their growing family. Janel raised 7 children and helped her husband run a successful drywall company that worked in Cache Valley and western region construction for more than 30 years.

Janel was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings in the Primary, Sunday School, Young Womens, and Relief Society organizations.

In 1977 Janel was hit by a car while walking across the street in downtown Logan. She spent many years recovering from the effects of the accident. Through the tender mercies of God, miraculous blessings, and the hard work that accompanied rehabilitation she was able to recover and carry on with her life’s mission. Janel’s example of facing difficulties with faith in our Savior Jesus Christ, along with her consistent determination to love and serve others, and her commitment to keeping her temple covenants while enduring to the end will forever be an inspiration and pattern for her family and close friends.

After retirement Janel and Lloyd served together in the Cub Scout organization and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brisbane, Australia.

Janel was preceded in death by her husband in 2018, her mother and her father and her brother, Lyle Myler Godfrey (Brenda) of Moreland, Idaho.

She is survived by her children: Michael Lloyd (Diana) Heaps of Smithfield, Utah; Diane Webb (Wayne) of Nampa, Idaho; Cristie Olsen (Jeff) of Kona, Hawaii; Allan George (Teresa) Heaps of Kingman, Arizona; Jeffrey Paul (Emily) Heaps of Dawsonville, Georgia; Annette Heaps of Smithfield, Utah; and Joshua Claire (Bethany) Heaps of Belleville, Ontario, Canada, her Brother; Kenneth Wendel (Audrey) Godfrey, and her sister Eloise (Robert) Fugal. Janel’s influence will continue with her 23 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, as well as the generations yet to come.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, April 11th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Smithfield 21st Ward building at 340 East 300 South in Smithfield from 9:30 - 10:45am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am on the same day in the same building.
