Joan Frances Soles Robson—beloved wife to Kent; mother to Kara (Dave), Kevin (Torri), Heather (John), and Amber (Ryan); grandmother to 18 and great-grandmother to 12—passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at age 87 on July 3, 2025, in Logan, Utah, surrounded by her loving family.
Joan was born in Brighton, New York, to Helen Darling Soles and James F. Soles. She was raised by her devoted mother, whom she often described as her hero. She grew up in East Rochester alongside her older brother Vince and younger brother George. In recent years, Joan was delighted to connect with her half-sister, Charlotte.
She graduated with high honors from East Rochester High and attended Rochester Institute of Technology. While in college, Joan was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. True to her thoughtful and discerning nature, she read every pamphlet the Church offered and completed The Book of Mormon before agreeing to meet with missionaries. She gained a testimony of its truthfulness and often described her decision to be baptized as “the best decision I ever made.” She remained a faithful and devoted member of the Church throughout her life, serving in various leadership callings in the Primary, Young Women’s, and Relief Society organizations at both the ward and stake levels.
In the summer of 1960, Joan traveled to Utah to attend a friend’s wedding, where she met Kent E. Robson, a groomsman in the same wedding party. Their courtship led to a sealing in the Salt Lake Temple on August 18, 1961. Together, they shared a life of love, purpose, and adventure—living in Germany, Poland, California, and ultimately settling in Logan, Utah, where Kent built his academic career as a professor of philosophy at Utah State University. She always expressed gratitude that they were able to live in such a beautiful place.
Joan later fulfilled a long-standing personal goal by completing her own degree at Utah State University. She graduated summa cum laude in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in Sociology, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA and completing well beyond the required credits. In her humility, she declined Valedictorian honors, choosing to give the recognition to a full-time student.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, and her grandson, Kade Robson Christiansen.
She lived a life of quiet, consistent service. Joan had a deep compassion for the underdog and was known for her loyalty, empathy, and refusal to judge others. She rarely spoke a negative word about anyone and lived by the motto, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
She adored her family and cherished family gatherings, meaningful conversations, and one-on-one time with each loved one. She had a passion for genealogy, loved to read, and delighted in watching classic films and mysteries. Joan had a quick wit and a playful sense of humor that brought frequent laughter—sometimes to the point of tears. She loved cheering for her children and grandchildren at games and performances, and was a loyal fan of the Utah Jazz and Utah State Aggies.
An excellent cook, Joan was especially known for her version of Texas sheet cake, which she lovingly prepared for her family the day before her passing. She was a devoted friend, a thoughtful listener, and a woman of deep faith and quiet strength. Her children will deeply miss being able to pick up the phone to share a burden, a thought, or a laugh. Her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue in the lives of all who knew her.
