John Jay Andersen

John Jay Andersen passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 at his daughter’s home in Flint, Texas.

Jay was born on December 27, 1935 in beautiful Logan, Utah to John Marler and Oginda Jensen Andersen.

Jay and his family have always been members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jay was very active in the church since his early youth, being ordained a Deacon, Teacher and Bishop, and later an Elder and the High Priest. At the age of 18, Jay served a two year mission in the North-Eastern States for the Church.

Jay attended Cache County schools and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation from Utah State he served as an officer in the Adjutant General Corps, US Army at Fort Ord in California. Before that, he served as a sergeant in the Utah National Guard, Artillery unit. After Jay’s military service he returned to Utah State University where he was employed as Program Director for Student Activities and later as Assistant Director of the College Union and finally as Director of the College Union.

In 1968, Jay accepted the position of Director of the new University Center and Coordinator of Student Activities at the University of Memphis, a position he held for 38 years. He retired on April 10 of 2006 from the University of Memphis.

Jay is survived by a sister, Geniel Pond of River Heights, Utah, a brother, Gary Andersen of Bountiful, Utah, 5 children, a son, Todd Andersen and wife Felicia of Lexington, South Carolina, a daughter, Kimberly Grosvenor and husband, Brian of Bravard, North Carolina, a daughter, Tiffany Sandor and husband, Ryan of Memphis, Tennessee, a daughter, Courtney Gray and husband, Jason of Flint, Texas, and a daughter, Tammy Andersen of California. Jay was also survived by 9 grandchildren, Kyle Woods, Shelby Andersen, Kallie Andersen, Weston Andersen, Brayden Grosvenor, Jake Grosvenor, Brittain Usher, Angelina Andersen and Jase Gray. He was predeceased by his beloved son Dustin Andersen in 2019.

A viewing will be held Friday, December 30th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary (34 E. Center St., Logan, UT) followed by a graveside service at Providence City Cemetery at 1 p.m.
