Obituary

Karma Jean Hills passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, after spending time celebrating her 80th birthday with friends and family who traveled from near and far to be with her.

Karma was born on June 16, 1946, in Palo Alto, California, to Norma Hanson and Richard Sonne. The second of three children, she enjoyed a happy childhood filled with Girl Scouts, frequent big family gatherings, and treasured visits to see her cousins. She was always creative and loved crafts and the arts, expressing this as a young child with her love of dolls, clothing and fashion. With her outgoing nature, Karma easily made a large friend group, a gift that she maintained throughout her life.

She attended Utah State University, where she earned a degree in Fashion Design and Textiles. As a member of Alpha Chi Omega, she formed deep friendships and developed a lasting love for Utah State, remaining a proud Aggie throughout her life. An accomplished designer, she was an award-winning participant in the university's annual fashion design competition in 1968. After graduation, she was selected for Macy's prestigious Executive Training Program and began her career with Macy's in San Francisco before working at stores throughout the Bay Area.

While living and working in the Bay Area, Karma met the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Hills. After they married, they embarked on a memorable adventure living in Johannesburg, South Africa, before returning to the United States to raise their family. Together they welcomed two daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca. The family made their home in San Ramon, California, where they raised their daughters before later moving to Kennewick, Washington. Kennewick remained Karma's home for the rest of her life, and it was there she formed many treasured friendships.

Karma devoted her life to her family. She lovingly cared for Rebecca, who has disabilities, with extraordinary patience, devotion, and selfless love. She was a gifted seamstress, creating beautiful dresses, costumes, and home décor for family and friends. Her love of art and art history inspired years of volunteer service in her daughters' elementary school classrooms, where she introduced students to great artists and fostered an appreciation for creativity.

She loved to travel, especially to America's national parks and Hawaii. Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Zion were among her favorites, and she treasured the memories made exploring them with her family. Karma also had a gift for bringing people together. Whether hosting a holiday gathering or a special celebration, she was known for her exquisite table settings, thoughtful favors, and the warmth that made every guest feel welcome.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Karma served with excellence in Primary, Young Women, and as Relief Society president on numerous occasions. Her favorite calling was serving in Activity Days, where her creativity, enthusiasm, and love for children shone. She also cherished the friendships she found through Daughters of Utah Pioneers and her Family Home Evening group, both of which brought her lasting joy and companionship.

Karma is survived by her beloved husband, Richard "Dick" Hills; her daughters, Rebecca Hills and Elizabeth Maxfield (Daniel); her cherished grandchildren, Kate, Griffin, and Callum Maxfield; her sister, Shirley Griffin (Bob); her brother, Rick Sonne (Peggy); and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Those who knew Karma will remember her infectious laugh, generous heart, and genuine interest in others. Her faith in Jesus Christ guided every aspect of her life and inspired her quiet service to her family, friends, and everyone she met. She leaves a legacy of selfless love and unwavering devotion to family and deep love of Jesus Christ. She created beauty wherever she went—in the clothes she sewed, the celebrations she planned, and the countless people she served. Her legacy of faith, kindness, creativity, and service will continue to bless her family, grandchildren and all who knew and loved her.

Karma's funeral will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Allen-Hall Mortuary 34 E Center, Logan, with a viewing beforehand at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery.
