Linda Bainum

July 13, 1940 — January 29, 2023

Linda J. Bainum, 82, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2023 in Logan Utah.

Linda was born and raised in Union, Utah. She was active, and loved spending time outdoors even into her adult years. She played tennis, hiked, and once hiked to the bottom and back to the top of the Grand Canyon in one day. She was also an avid reader—something she passed on to her boys. She was known for her outgoing personality and her ability to make friends no matter where she lived. Her friends and family recognized her love of giving thoughtful gifts for any occasion.

Linda married at the age of 23 and gave birth to three boys, David, Craig, and Don, Jr, who did not survive his birth. Divorced shortly thereafter, she raised David and Craig in the ‘60s and 70s on her own, with virtually no help from the boys’ father. She primarily worked for oil companies where she became a licensed land manager.

As she raised her boys, she attended night school on and off until she earned a Bachelors Degree from The University of Denver Colorado Woman’s College. She was awarded the degree at the same time her first grandchild was born—June of 1986. After she retired the first time, she earned a Masters Degree from Southern Methodist University. She was the first of her parents, grandparents, or siblings to earn a college degree.

When she retired from the oil company, she took several years to enjoy herself and trained to become a mediator. She was hired by the State of Utah to perform mediations in family law cases, something else that she loved doing.

Linda loved Southwest art and collect paintings, small statues, and jewelry. After she retired from the state and as she continued moving in to smaller apartments, she always found a way to display the art. In her later years, she served as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Alabama Birmingham mission.

She is predeceased by her parents, Harold and LaVern Smart; her three older siblings, Betty Kvist, Elden, and Ivan; and her sons David and Don, Jr. She is survived by her brother Keith Smart, her sister-in-law Virginia Smart, her son Craig, daughter-in-law Michelle Bainum, their five children Jennifer Smith, Dallin Bainum, Megan Bowen, Katie Barker, Jacob Bainum, her Granddaughter Rati Bainum, and her 13 greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary; 34 East Center; Logan, Utah February 11 at 11:00 AM. She will be interred next to David at the Memorial Murray Mortuary.
