Marie Eldredge Bartlett (July 14, 1934-May 14, 2025)
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great, great-grandmother Marie Eldredge Bartlett, 90, passed away on May 14, 2025, in North Logan, Cache County, Utah, surrounded by her loving family.
Marie was born in the home of her grandmother, Clarissa Ellis Seeley Hanson, on July 14, 1934, in Roosevelt, Duchesne County, Utah. Her grandmother was a trained nurse and operated a maternity ward in her home since there was no hospital in Roosevelt at that time. Marie was the fourth child of George Raymond Eldredge (1906-1966) and Melba Hanson Eldredge (1908-2000), Bette, Glen, Stephen, Marie, Johnny, Clark, Nancy and JoAnn.
Marie grew up in Roosevelt, Duchesne County, Utah, on an 80-acre farm. The family’s four-room home had no running water or indoor plumbing. She helped weed the large garden and gather the eggs, but she never had to milk the cows! She said her mother did not want milking the cows to become the job of her daughters so she wouldn’t let them learn how. Mom made us laugh at the story of Herkimer, the rooster, chasing her every time she went to the outhouse.
Marie received her education at Ballard Elementary School, Alterra High School and attended her senior year at the new Union High School. She was a cheerleader her freshman year, Junior Prom Queen, and editor of her yearbook during her senior year. She played in the band all four years of high school, beginning with the trumpet then switching to the French horn. Mom said there was nothing that thrilled her more than to see and hear a band play and perform. She took several sewing classes, and during her senior year, she made a beige wool dress that won her first place in the regional, “Make It Yourself with Wool contest”. She wore that dress for several years.
Marie first saw her future husband, Clyde Ray Bartlett, when he performed in a school play during junior high school. They became high school sweethearts and married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 15, 1952. Together they raised seven children, Lynette Hutchison, Charleston, South Carolina Mission, (Kim), LaNae McKenna, Hyde Park, Utah, (Todd), LuAnn Weber, Millville, Utah, (Duane), Leesa Boman, Grantsville, Utah, (Doug), LaRee Evans, Hyde Park, Utah, (Bill), Launa Godfrey, Logan, Utah, (Ron), and her favorite son, Landon, Williamston, Michigan, (Trinette DeSpain). She loved to spoil, with treats and ice cream, her 36 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and 1 great, great-grandchild.
Marie was the epitome of a loving, gentle, devoted, and talented mother. If she wasn’t making soap from lye and rendered animal fat, which she used to wash our clothes, she was baking bread in her signature round bread pans, i.e. metal yeast cans, or sewing new clothes for us. She also sewed clothes for our “Tammy” dolls, as well as making doll clothes to sell to the neighbors around Christmastime. She blessed many neighbors and friends in need of a meal with her delicious fried chicken, cherry pie, and Parker House rolls. Her homemade cinnamon bread and honey butter were anxiously awaited by neighbors and friends at Christmastime. She did her best to teach her daughters all of these skills…any homemaking talents we have, we owe to our angel mother.
Mom was a master gardener. She grew robust tomato plants from seed in her make-shift greenhouse before transplanting them outside. She and Dad always had a large, beautiful garden, and Mom would spend hours canning and freezing the bountiful produce. Dad often commented at Sunday dinners that everything on the table to eat was from their garden and/or livestock. They always strived to be very self-sufficient. Mom worked so hard for all of us, and we are extremely grateful.
If you left Marie’s kitchen table hungry, it was of no fault but your own because she always made sure there was more than enough delicious food for everyone. We miss the Oreos stored in the ceramic white duck cookie jar, the never-ending Aggie ice cream in her freezer, and the bags of chocolate candy bars she always had stashed away to share with her grandkids. We miss the Christmas bags with a pair of socks, an envelope with money and candy she carefully prepared for each of us. We miss the individual homemade birthday cards she made. We miss her quiet giggle that would turn her face bright red and cause tears to run down her cheeks.
Marie was devoted and faithful in her testimony of Jesus Christ and His restored church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her testimony was solid, and she never wavered from what she knew in her heart to be true. She wrote; “I must have been born with a testimony because even though I grew up in an inactive family, I have always had a desire to go to church…I have felt the comfort of my Savior.”
Marie loved Primary and served as Primary President or Primary Counselor many times during her life. She also taught many Cub Scouts over the years. She made birthday cards for all the children in Primary. She also loved serving in the ward library and made many improvements to it during her time there. Another highlight of her life was helping as a volunteer each Halloween season at the North Logan Pumpkin Walk dressed as an adorable, enchanting witch.
She had a great desire to serve a mission. After not being able to convince Dad to commit to a mission, she went to the Lord, telling Him, “I’ve done all I can, it’s up to you, Heavenly Father.” Not long after that, their bishop called them into his office and asked Dad if there was any reason he and Mom could not serve a mission. Dad had to say no, and they were soon called to the Philippines, Baguio Mission, serving from December 1997 to May 1999. Together they also fulfilled a service mission at the Church Employment Center and served together in Young Single Adult Stakes hosting many YSA’s in their home for many yummy refreshments.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Glen, Stephen, Johnny, and Clark; husband, Clyde; son-in-law, Kim Hutchison; granddaughter, Katie Weber; great-granddaughter, Anne Marie Jensen; and twin great-grandsons, Luke and Landon Graff. She is survived by her children and siblings, Bette, Nancy, and JoAnn.
The family expresses a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Huffman, the wonderful caregivers at North Logan Maple Springs Assisted Living, and Intermountain Homecare and Hospice Services.
