Marilyn Hugie Wayman, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026, at the age of 96.
Marilyn was born on January 16, 1930, in Logan, Utah, to Merrill V. and Della Hansen. She was the second oldest of six children: Doris, Marilyn, Norma, Grace, Ellen, and Merv. Her childhood during the Great Depression left an indelible mark on her character and values. She would fondly recall sharing a single dress or a bicycle for a Christmas gift with her sisters—a memory that spoke to the resourcefulness and close bonds forged during those lean years. She went without the niceties in life in order to give to others – selflessness was one of her most beautiful attributes and a hallmark of her life.
In her youth, Marilyn met and married Rex Hugie, and together they built a life and family. She devoted herself entirely to raising their five sons, Jeff (Dawnita), Craig (Tanya), Bryon (Shelly), Brett (Julie) and Steven (Monica), creating a loving home filled with warmth, care and chaos. Her sons have long debated who held the special place as her favorite - testament to her extraordinary gift of making each of them feel uniquely cherished and loved. Not only did she raise her boys, she raised many of her children’s friends. It was not uncommon to have 3-4 “extras” around the dinner table, where she warmly welcomed them and took great interest in their lives. Many of those friends have remained close throughout the years. Throughout her life, she was blessed with wonderful friendships with people of all ages, marked by genuine love and kindness. To those friends who showed her such devotion, we are forever grateful.
With the exception of a brief period in Pocatello, Idaho, Marilyn's life was rooted in Logan, Utah, particularly in the College Ward community. She spent the majority of her 96 years across the road from where she was born. She was not one for grand adventures; rather, she found joy and comfort in the simple things. Home was her sanctuary, and most family vacations stayed within a 400-mile radius—a reflection of her contentment with life's quiet pleasures. She was happiest on cold, sunny days following fresh snowfall, often gazing out her window in quiet appreciation of winter's beauty.
After Rex's passing, Marilyn reconnected with Russell Wayman, a childhood acquaintance. They were married in Dallas, Texas, in 2000, and enjoyed 16 wonderful years together until his passing in 2016. Russell became a cherished part of our family, and their marriage brought additional joy to Marilyn's later years.
Marilyn's greatest passion was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took immense pride in the lives they have built and the people they have become. Her only hobby was loving them—a pursuit at which she excelled.
Though Marilyn leaves us with profound sadness, we take comfort in knowing that she continues to be our greatest supporter and champion. We love you, Mom, and we wish you a joyful reunion with those you have loved and lost.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff of Maple Springs and the care and love they showed to her. In addition, thanks for the many visits from lifelong friends – it meant the world to her, and it truly brightened her day.
