Maurice Gene Montgomery

Maurice Gene Montgomery, known to family and friends as Gene, passed away on September 16, 2026, in Farmington, Utah, at the age of 70. He was born on February 13, 1956, in Tracy, California, to Maurice Harry Montgomery and Etta Abel.

Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart and wife, Danna May Montgomery, and his son, Maurice Kimball Montgomery. He is survived by his son, Duren Montgomery (Heather), and his grandchildren.

Gene grew up in California, where he developed a lifelong love of being outdoors. As a young man, he enjoyed surfing and fishing, and fishing remained one of his favorite activities throughout his life. His love of learning and his appreciation for the natural world led him to Utah State University, where he earned a degree in ornamental horticulture. He put that education to use throughout his career, working as a groundskeeper until his retirement.

At the age of 25, Gene met his sweetheart, Danna May. Their meeting began a life together centered on faith, family, and service. They raised two children together and Gene took great pride in being a father. He loved his family deeply and found being a husband to Danna May to be the greatest joy of his life.

Gene’s life was a miracle. Shortly after getting married, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He received treatment at the UCLA medical center and through a lifesaving procedure and countless prayers, he survived. His son, Duren, was born less than one year later.

Gene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many church callings throughout his life. He served a mission in Idaho as a young man and, following retirement, he and his wife served another mission together in Oregon. He also spent time working in the Logan Utah Temple, a responsibility he valued deeply.

Perhaps one of the greatest examples of Gene's character was the care he gave to Danna May as her health began to decline. After returning from their mission, he devoted himself to caring for his wife and supporting her through the challenges of her declining health. His love for her was steady and enduring, and he remained by her side as her needs increased.

Gene was a positive person who tried to see the good in life. He had a way of finding something to appreciate even during difficult circumstances. He enjoyed watching football, playing chess, fishing, caring for plants, and spending time with his family. He had a particular love for making and eating desserts. His all-time favorite treat was See's Candy.

Gene will be remembered not only for the things he enjoyed, but for the way he treated people. He was kind, optimistic, hardworking, faithful, and devoted to his family. He loved being a husband and father, and later cherished being a grandfather. His life was built around the people he loved, the faith he believed in, and the simple joys he found along the way.

Though his family will deeply miss him, Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, service, and optimism. His example and the memories he created will continue to live on in the lives of his children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
