Max Hadfield, 102 years of age, passed away of natural causes at his home the afternoon of June 3, 2026. He was the eighth of ten children of William and Grace Hadfield and was born at their home in Grouse Creek, Utah, on May 2, 1924. He attended the Grouse Creek School up to the 10th grade and, later, Logan Schools, graduating from Logan High School in 1942. At age 5, Max lost his father to kidney disease. So, the children and his widowed mother had to find a way to take care of themselves on a ranch in the wilds of northwestern Utah. His father figure came in the form of his 16-year-old brother, Gordon. Although life was very hard in his growing-up years, through drought, the Great Depression, and losses of some of their ranch animals, Max looked back fondly on those days - doing ranch work on horses, playing with cousins, and going to school with his friends. Cherished relationships continued throughout his lifetime.
Max joined the US Army Air Corps a few months after graduating from high school, stirred on by the desire to serve his country after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in World War II. He served at the same time as three of his older brothers. He completed Mechanic, Pre-Flight, Aerial Gunnery, Bombardier, and Flight Engineer Training. He had flown in B17, B24, and B29 Super Fortress planes and was ready to go to the South Pacific when the atomic bombs were dropped and the war ended. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946.
An important event happened while on furlough between trainings. He met his future wife. Max’s sister arranged that first date with Marie Nielsen. He called Marie his Honey from Honeyville.
After the war, he tried several ways to make money, all the while having an adventurous spirit. When Max was getting close to considering marriage, he was approached by his church leaders and was asked to serve a mission, which Marie encouraged. He served in the Texas area where he had done some of his Air Force training. After his return, they were married in the Logan Temple on September 7, 1951. His entrepreneurial spirit led them to try several things, but they ended up staying with a drapery business they named Trend Interiors.
Max and Marie’s sons followed them into the business, which has served Cache Valley for almost 70 years. Marie and Max were truly a team.
Max was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with a strong testimony of Christ and His teachings. He served in many church positions and took the opportunity to serve a mission with Marie in the Canada Vancouver Mission in 1991, spending their time in Prince George, British Columbia. They also served for 3 years in the Logan, Utah Temple.
Max and Marie are the parents of 7 children: Randy (Kathryn), Brent (Sheri), Kelly, deceased (Lucille), Jan Reese (Tracy), Mark (Liz), Linda Garrett (Doug), and Kent. They have 27 grandchildren and 85 great-grandchildren who have enjoyed the love and support of Max and Marie, and visits to their home over the years. And, 3 great great-grandchildren added recently.
Max and Marie lived in River Heights for 57 years of their 74 years of marriage.
Marie passed away Oct. 21, 2025, 2 1/2 months shy of her 100th birthday. Max was also proceeded in death by all of his siblings and their spouses, son Kelly Jay Hadfield, a daughter-in-law Karrie Hadfield, granddaughter-in-law Courtney Reese and two great-grandsons, Merick and Corban Bindrup.
