Maxine Joy Nielsen Burdge

July 8, 1934 — September 25, 2023

Smithfield, Utah

Maxine Joy Nielsen Burdge passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Logan Regional Hospital,
Monday, September 25, 2023.

Maxine was born July 8, 1934, to Simpson A. Nielsen and Hazel Wilson Nielsen. She was raised in Hyrum,
Utah, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was the 5 th of 8 children. She
attended South Cache High. She then married J. Keith Nilson in 1951 and raised 4 children together.
They later divorced. She married Cleland A. Burdge in 1989. They lived in Salt Lake City and Springville,
UT for a time, near Cleland’s sons, finally moving back to Smithfield where she was happy to be near
friends and family.

Maxine loved to work in the yard, growing many beautiful flowers at all of the homes where she lived. In
her later years, her brother Barry helped her plant flowers and tomatoes. She shared so many memories
of her childhood with us, she spent many hours writing and compiling the Wilson/Nielsen family history.
She prepared books for each family member to cherish. She always looked and dressed beautifully. She
loved music including Tony Bennett, dancing, puzzles, coloring art, jewelry and shopping. She was a
loving Mother and friend who had a good listening ear and always offered caring words and
encouragement. Every morning she would get up whistling and singing. She was truly a Joy, as her father
said, “You are my pride and joy”.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cleland A. “Bud” Burdge, and siblings
Vaughn Nielsen (Jean], Lois Evans (Gordon), Shirley L. Burke (Gil); her first son Stanley Keith Nilson;
brother-in-law Bart Bradshaw and nephew Joey Bradshaw, sister-in-law Pat Nielsen.
Maxine is survived by her brothers Dean (Myrna), Denton (Diane), and Barry (Diane) Nielsen; her sister
and best friend, Sandra Bradshaw. Children Jan Nilson (partner John Hurren), Gary (Kathy) Nilson, and
Cory (Angie) Nilson; daughter-in-law Janet Maurer. Maxine had 15 grandchildren, 18 great
grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as a large extended family and many friends.

“Butterflies are free and so is she”.

A special thanks to Logan Regional Hospital nurses, doctors and staff; and to Rocky Mountain Care staff
