Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, NaDean Allen Buttars, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in her 93rd year of life, with family at her side.
NaDean was born on January 7, 1934, in Preston, Idaho, to Grover Elijah and Francetta Harris Allen, the seventh of their nine children. She grew up on the family farm in Cove, Utah, and graduated from North Cache High School, where she was a very good student and musician.
NaDean loved farm life and was a great help to her parents. She enjoyed riding horses, and family members recalled that she even broke a horse for riding. She was a bit of a tomboy who enjoyed being outdoors with her five brothers and willingly hauled hay and milked cows.
NaDean met Alton Wayne Buttars on a blind date set up by her cousin and a friend of his. After several months of dating, they married on June 17, 1952, in the Logan LDS Temple and made their home in Weston, Idaho.
As a faithful church member, NaDean served in many callings throughout her life. Most remarkable, however, is that she became the Cove Ward organist at the age of 12 and continued serving as an organist wherever she lived for more than 70 years. NaDean and Alton completed an LDS Mission to Ireland in 2001 and they served together as officiators in the Logan Temple for 12 years.
NaDean was never afraid of hard work. She worked alongside Alton on the Weston farm they purchased in 1959, and she canned and froze produce from her garden, as well as fresh peas from her Allen cousins in Cove and fresh peaches from Brigham City.
NaDean shared her many talents generously. In the 1960s, she played the piano in a dance band that performed at church and community dances. She sewed beautiful clothes for her daughters and made quilts for her children and grandchildren. In her 40s, she enrolled in oil painting classes and left her children a treasured collection of her art.
NaDean’s children cherish countless memories of summer picnics, camping in the mountains, and watching her share her time and talents in service to others. Within the family, she was especially famous for her delicious raisin-filled cookies at the annual Labor Day campout. She loved her family deeply and she and Alton delighted in Sunday night visits at their home and traveling across the country to visit grandchildren.
NaDean is survived by her five children, Kathy (Joe) Archer of North Logan; Blaine (Ramona) Buttars of Smithfield; Sharel (Jerren) Cundick of Preston; Debby (Chris) Holbrook of Herriman, and Ray (Tiffany) Buttars of South Jordan. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and Alton’s two sisters, VaLoy Packer and Carolyn King.
NaDean was preceded in death by her husband, Alton, her parents, and all eight of her siblings.
The family extends appreciation to the kind and loving staff and management at Autumn Care Assisted Living and to Dr. Russell Hirst, family physician for many decades.
