Patricia K Huff

April 23, 1939 — December 10, 2023

Logan, Utah

Our beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, Patricia Ann Kelly Huff, 84, of North Logan City, Utah passed away on December 10, 2023, surrounded by loving family members.

Patricia, born on April 23, 1939, to Joe P and Marie Kathrine Larsen Kelly in Ogden, Utah, immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. She was busy, happy, intelligent, determined, and excelled in life. Her early years were filled with reading, music, sewing, cooking, and helping care for her five younger sisters.

At the age of fourteen, Patricia met Duane James Huff when her family moved to Pocatello, ID. After four years of friendship and dating, Patricia graduated as an honor student from Pocatello High School in 1957. While Duane served an Eastern States LDS mission, Patricia pursued further education at BYU.  In the summer of 1961, Patricia participated in the Hill Cumorah Pageant, and an extension to Duane’s mission meant they would be there at the same time. When she got off the bus, Elder Huff was there to greet her. As their eyes met, she knew she was to marry him!

On June 13, 1962, Patricia and Duane were married in the Logan LDS Temple, and this year marked sixty-one happy, wonderful years together. As a newlywed couple living in Provo, UT she finished her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the latter in Early Childhood Development. Patricia was an excellent teacher, and after a few years of teaching at BYU, the couple moved to Detroit, MI for Duane to work on his Doctorate and Patricia supervised student teachers. Moving, education, and a growing family kept her very busy. Alamosa, CO and San Diego, CA brought great friends and many challenging and exciting experiences. Patricia loved San Diego and would have been happy to stay there with Duane and their seven children for the rest of her life, but that was not to be.

After six years, they moved to Logan, UT (while pregnant with her eighth child!) for Duane to teach at the Logan LDS Institute. Weeks later, Patricia suffered a heart attack while in her third trimester. With the help of attentive doctors, she miraculously survived as did her youngest child. Over the next forty-five years, Logan became “home.” Here she made life-long friends, sacrificed endlessly to raise her children, and worked many jobs to help support the family. After her children graduated, she returned to her love of education by becoming an administrator for graduate students in the College of Education at USU.

Patricia was an accomplished musician and was regularly involved in accompanying others on the piano and singing in choirs, and she instilled this love of music in all of her children. Ministering for the Lord was also central to her life, and she was a sincere follower of Jesus Christ. She found joy serving in the church and was often recognized and remembered for her loving dedication and exceptional contributions. After retirement, Patricia and Duane served a CES Mission in Nauvoo at the Joseph Smith Academy, and they found joy working in the Logan temple for fourteen years. As a fiercely dedicated mother, her family came first and was Patricia’s deepest love.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents Joe and Kathrine Kelly, her sister Christine Kelly, and son John Huff [Layne Baugh]. She is survived by her husband Duane Huff; children Kelly Hansen [Shawn], Elaine Huff, David Huff [Patrese Bradford], Michael Huff [Pam Shepherd], Steven Huff [Elizabeth Maybe], Daniel Huff [Sarah Jacobs], and Matthew Huff [Emily Phillips]; thirty-one grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Jolynn Christiansen, Ruth Christensen, Kathrine Perry, and Janet Kelly; and their “adopted” son Rick Steadman [Rita].

The family is grateful to the many caregivers and medical professionals, as well as the wonderful staff at Maple Springs, for their tireless efforts caring for Patricia.
