Born October 17, 1932 in Logan, Utah, to Sidney Richard Stock and Josephine Clark, Reed Stock was the first member of the family to be born in a hospital, rather than at home.
He was raised in Logan, where he attended Whittier Elementary School. In 1945, the family moved to New Jersey where Reed attended Atlantic Highlands High School. He came back to Logan to obtain a BA from Utah State Agricultural College (now USU). He then returned to New Jersey for graduate school at Princeton and Rutgers University where he earned his PhD in English Literature.
He came back to Logan to teach at Utah State University in 1959, where he met Janet Clark, whom he married in June of 1960. For forty years he taught English Literature at USU, serving as Department Head for two years.
He was a devoted Episcopalian and was active at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Logan since 1975. He helped revitalize the congregation with trained seminarians, paving the way to employ a full time priest. He served as Senior Warden frequently. He later served on the main governing board and the finance committee of the statewide Episcopal church. He designed the beautiful stained glass “St. John’s Window,” on the south side of the church, which was commissioned by the Champ Family. He was a concert pianist and organist serving at St. John’s for more than 30 years.
He passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026 at Logan Regional Hospital from causes incident to age. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, their three children Laura (Alfred) Anderson, David (Emily Schnabl), and Katherine (Todd) Abel, eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
The Celebration of Life service will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 85 East 100 North, Logan, UT on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 11:00 am. A lunch reception will follow the service.
