Reid Herd

September 14, 1953 — October 7, 2025

North Logan

Robert Reid Herd, passed away on October 7, 2025 at the age of 72, surrounded by his loving family. Reid was born on September 14, 1953, in Logan, Utah, to Robert J and Faun Gilbert Herd. He and his sweetheart, Karen Allred Herd, were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Utah Temple on August 2, 1975. They were blessed with 50 years together. He built his life on the principles of faith, service, and work. Through his example, he taught his children to love the Lord, serve others, and work hard. His wife, family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ were his greatest joys.

Reid believed there was dignity in work and built this work ethic alongside his parents and siblings. Their family worked as a team, preparing and delivering the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper and the Deseret News early each morning to many homes. Other hours of the week were filled with hauling and splitting wood for their wood-burning stoves. Reid loved working with his Grandpa Gilbert on his farm. Together they cared for the cattle and completed each day's tasks on tractors. This work ethic continued throughout his life.

As a youth, Reid enjoyed running free in the sunny outdoors with his younger brother, Neil, and their close buddies and friends. He loved riding his bike to Hooper Springs for a drink of soda water and swimming in Lakey's pond, at Corbridge’s Ranch or in the Bear River. At Corbridge Ranch he enjoyed riding horses and helping to move the livestock from one pasture to another. Reid loved the challenge of fishing in Ledge Creek, Blackfoot Reservoir, and Tin Cup. He cherished the times spent fishing with his Dad. He was very proud whenever he caught a fish.

Reid was a gifted mechanic. His mechanical skills began to blossom as a toddler with tinker toys and experimenting with taking locks off doors in his home and then replacing them. Reid joined his father in an auto business at Herd’s Chevron in Soda Springs, Idaho following his schooling. Reid shared his talents and skills when he was employed as a Service Manager and mechanic at various car dealerships. He also worked for a short time with his son, Ryan, in excavation. Later, Reid worked side by side with Karen as managers at Pioneer Valley Lodge Retirement Center, in North Logan, Utah.

Reid had a kind, quiet way about him. He touched hearts in a personal way. He was always willing and eager to assist others and consistently demonstrated love and compassion while doing so. Reid loved people and would always go the extra mile to be there for them and help in any way that he could.

Reid was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a firm testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel. As a young man, he served as a representative of Jesus Christ in the California South Mission. He faithfully served in numerous Church positions throughout his life. One of his choicest experiences was when he and Karen served together as Church Service Missionaries on Temple Square and in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. He had great love for the temple and felt blessed to serve as an ordinance worker in the Logan Utah Temple.

Together, Reid and Karen found happiness, joy, and fulfillment spending time with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and dear friends. Reid found joy in music, nature, gardening, making motors crank, and temple attendance. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: a ripe tomato or cucumber from his garden, and the feeling of sunshine on his face as he relaxed on his back patio. Reid loved to take in all of God's beautiful creations as he went on countless drives through the countryside. Sunflowers always brought a smile to Reid’s face as he watched them turn their heads toward the sunshine.

Reid was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As his mortal body waned, he valiantly pressed forward, and his spirit was never stronger. His family will forever treasure memories of him and his legacy will live in their hearts forever.

Reid is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his children, Ryan (Jamie) Herd, Amy (Benjamin) Griffin, Annette (Corey) Hillyard, Alison (Royce) Downs, Brady (Brittany) Herd; his five siblings; 18 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy Reid Herd, his parents, Robert and Faun Herd, and a great-granddaughter, Millie Watterson.
