On the morning of December 20, 2025, Sharlyn Petersen Floyd passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Sharlyn was born to Lois Ann Lewis Petersen on March 18, 1936, in Logan, Utah. She loved Logan and spent the first part of her life there.
She started her love for Piano at the age of 8 and studied with Professor Irving Wasserman from Poland, who had studied under many of the great European musicians. As a teenager, she had the opportunity to take Organ lessons from Roy Darley, who at the time was the Organist for the Tabernacle Choir. Her mother would drive her down once a week, and she would take her Organ lesson on the organ located in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. This is where the magic began and her love for music. She learned to play by ear, which was always a surprise for many.
There are so many fun stories of her growing up in Cache Valley, but the one that stands out is when she and her cousin Marcelyn, at the age of 10, decided, while their parents were on vacation, to take their grandfather's Model T Ford and drive to Providence, which was about three miles away. Marcelyn knew how to drive, and my mother knew how to shift, so off they went. They made it to Providence, and their Aunt Thelma was very surprised to see them in her father’s car. They were told to turn around and head back home. So off they went down the back roads and past the fairgrounds to home. As Mom would chuckle, she would say Grandfather was never told about the little drive, but oh, what a story to tell.
She graduated from Logan High School and went on to attend Utah State University. She loved her college years. She decided to join a sorority and hoped to receive a bid from one. She received two bids to pledge—one for Chi Omega Sorority and one for Sigma Kappa. She chose Chi Omega Sorority. There, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Child Development Degree, along with a Kindergarten Endorsement Certificate. She did her student teaching at the Ellis School in Logan and then went on to teach at David Gourley School in Salt Lake for the next 38 years, only taking time off to have two beautiful children.
She taught 3rd grade for several years, and then they needed a certified kindergarten teacher. She taught Kindergarten for 2 years and then was asked to move to 2nd grade, where she taught for the remainder of her career. She loved music and also taught a music program to 3rd graders, which then produced several musical productions. She received many awards while teaching, but the one that stands out is when she received Teacher of the Year for the State of Utah. She was admired by so many. She was always told by principals that there weren’t enough Mrs. Floyds. She was a mentor to many student teachers and loved sharing her love for teaching. What a great legacy to leave.
Shar was a single mother who put her all into raising two beautiful children. She was a dedicated mother who did her best and sacrificed so much over the years. There were many obstacles throughout her life as a single mom, but she handled them with grace and strength. We thank her for the sacrifices she made, for the times she wasn’t sure but leaped anyway, and for the support she showed in her own way. She was a mother of strength, resilience, and selflessness, and will be missed greatly.
She is survived by her dedicated daughter, Lisa Hood; grandchildren, Benjamin Hood and Lily Ann Hood; son, Todd Floyd; and grandchildren, Jordan, Bailey, Logan, Andrew, and Easton Floyd. One furry grandchild, Kevin, loved his grandma dearly. Special thanks to Benjamin and Lily for all the support they showed their mother, and thank you to Benjamin, Lily, and Jordan for the love, support, and dedication they brought to their grandmother. She cherished every time they visited.
The family also wants to thank the CNAs and staff at Legacy in South Jordan. We are eternally grateful to them for the love they showed Shar and the care they gave to make her comfortable. Every visit from the CNAs brought a smile to her face and gave the family peace of mind about her treatment.\
A graveside service, under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary, will be held on January 2, 2026 in the Logan City Cemetery at 12pm.
