Sonya “Sunny” (Ellis) McBride , 88, of Logan Utah, passed away peacefully of age-related causes on April 21, 2026 at her temporary home in Provo Utah.
Sonya was born May 4, 1937 in Logan Utah to Lucy Niederhauser and Joseph Vereen. She is sealed to her step-father James William Ellis & Lucy Niederhauser Ellis.
Sonya married her lifelong companion Gilbert Martin McBride of Park City UT on January 15, 1958 in Las Vegas NV. Their marriage was sealed in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1962. Gil’s career in law enforcement and then as a housing manager for government and military facilities took their family around the world, living in Salt Lake City and Dutch John UT, Spain, Germany, Maryland, San Francisco and Tacoma before returning to Utah. Their children have a full variety of memories and experiences. Gil passed away in 1999.
Sonya and Gil welcomed three children into the world who were the joy and purpose of their lives and they loved them unconditionally, Thomas McBride, Seattle WA, Shari (Steve) Acevedo, Orem UT, and Mary (Yvan) Syrenne, Florence MT. Sonya had a quiet but deeply spiritual testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of His saving grace and its continuance in the next life where she and Gil are now reunited with family and friends.
Sonya was known as the neighborhood grandma for as long as she lived in Logan, regularly giving candy and treats to neighboring children. She had a youthful spirit and personality her whole life, often referring to herself as “just a big kid” and playfully lamenting that she hoped she “would never grow up.” She was an avid gardener, a lover of crossword puzzles and TCM movie marathons, and a wonderful cook. She had a big and loving heart and, and fitting to her nickname “Sunny”, brought joy and light to all who knew her.
Sonya is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brothers William Page, Bernalillo NM and Clair Ellis, Providence UT. Her sister Sandra (Ellis) Erickson of American Fork UT passed away last December.
A funeral service for Sonya will be held on her birthday, Monday, May 4, 2026 at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan UT at 12:00 noon, with a visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. that day. She will be buried next to Gilbert in Park City UT.
